Planning starts with listening. For Richland County, SC, that means bringing residents, conservation organizations, and planners together to help shape a long-term vision for the places people value…open space, trails, natural resources, and the landscapes that contribute to quality of life. Great work by our planning team putting community voices at the center of the process! #CommunityPlanning #OpenSpace #ConservationPlanning
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit our Charleston, SC office and collaborate with an incredible team on the Richland County Conservation Land Management & Open Space Plan. As part of the planning process, we hosted a community open house to gather input that will help shape the future of conservation, open space, trails, and natural resources across We were thrilled to see a strong turnout and were grateful for the support of local conservation organizations that joined us to share their expertise and engage with residents. The conversations were thoughtful, insightful, and a great reminder of how passionate communities are about protecting the places that contribute to recreation, environmental health, and quality of life. A special thank you to my teammates Lucas Hernandez, Erin (Minnigan) Mehard, AICP, and Jacob Coffman for their hard work, collaboration, and enthusiasm throughout the process. It was a pleasure working alongside such a dedicated team to connect with the community and advance this important effort. Thank you to everyone who attended, shared ideas, and helped make the event such a success. We look forward to continuing this collaborative effort as we develop a long-term vision for conserving and enhancing Richland County’s open spaces. #CommunityEngagement #ConservationPlanning #OpenSpacePlanning #RichlandCountySC #PublicOutreach #PlanningForTheFuture Weston & Sampson #LandscapeArchitecture #EnvironmentalPlanning

🌊 What if the next line of coastal defense could grow stronger over time? Today in Folly Beach, South Carolina, Weston & Sampson is partnering with the City of Folly Beach and Shoreline Restoration Group to install the city's first model living shoreline at Folly River Park. Rather than relying solely on hardened infrastructure, the project uses nature-based solutions—including oyster castles, bagged oyster shells, and manufactured wire reefs—to create a more protected edge between the Folly River and the marsh. As the living shoreline develops, it is designed to: 🌊 Reduce shoreline erosion and soften wave energy 🦪 Create habitat for oysters, fish, shellfish, and shorebirds 💧 Improve water quality 🌿 Protect the existing marsh edge 🏡 Demonstrate an alternative shoreline protection strategy for local property owners The project is also intended to serve as a community resource, helping Folly Beach residents better understand how living shorelines can protect waterfront property while working with—not against—the natural environment. As our own Kim Morganello, Ecological Design Leader, told Live 5 News, one of the advantages of living shorelines and other nature-based solutions is that they can get better with time as oysters establish themselves and the installation develops into a natural reef. 👉 Read the full Live 5 News story and learn how Folly Beach is letting nature help build its next line of defense. https://ow.ly/Kkn450ZzUzC #LivingShorelines #CoastalResilience #NatureBasedSolutions #FollyBeach #SouthCarolina #ClimateResilience #CoastalEngineering #ResilientInfrastructure #Weston&Sampson #TransformYourEnvironment

🌊 Coastal resilience starts long before the next storm arrives. As coastal communities across North Carolina face increased flooding, stronger storms, and rising sea levels, resilience planning has become essential—not optional. In Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County, North Carolina, Weston & Sampson partnered with local leaders through the North Carolina Resilient Coastal Communities Program to help identify vulnerabilities, prioritize infrastructure investments, and develop a roadmap for long-term resilience. Our team evaluated critical infrastructure, natural resources, and vulnerable populations while engaging community members and local agencies throughout the planning process. The result was a portfolio of actionable projects—including policy initiatives, nature-based solutions, and infrastructure improvements—designed to reduce flood risk and strengthen the community's ability to adapt to future challenges. By combining technical expertise with community engagement and funding strategies, we're helping coastal communities turn resilience planning into meaningful action. 👉 Learn more about our climate resiliency services: https://ow.ly/c7XN50Zy9Fy #ClimateResilience #CoastalResilience #FloodResilience #NatureBasedSolutions #CommunityPlanning #NorthCarolina #Weston&Sampson #TransformYourEnvironment

Is your collection system taking on more flow than it should during wet weather events? Summer's typically lower groundwater levels create ideal conditions for sewer smoke testing, a proven method for identifying inflow sources that can reduce system capacity, contribute to overflows, and increase treatment costs. By locating issues such as improper connections, municipalities can prioritize repairs, reduce stormwater entering the collection system, and make better use of existing infrastructure capacity. With smoke testing season underway, now is the time to identify problem areas and develop a plan to address sewer inflow before the next heavy rain event. Learn how sewer smoke testing can help improve system performance and support your long-term collection system goals. https://lnkd.in/ecws3DkS #Wastewater #CollectionSystems #SmokeTesting #InflowAndInfiltration #MunicipalInfrastructure #AssetManagement #Stormwater #WaterInfrastructure #Weston&Sampson #TransformYourEnvironment

Modernizing critical wastewater infrastructure helps communities operate more safely, efficiently, and reliably. In Immokalee, Florida, Weston & Sampson supported the Immokalee Water and Sewer District with upgrades to three wastewater clarifiers that had been in service for more than 30 years. Our work included USDA funding assistance, planning, design, permitting, bidding support, and construction administration. The upgrades included new clarifier mechanisms, improved piping, safer maintenance access, automated cleaning systems, and enhanced scum-removal equipment. Since project completion, the improvements have reduced maintenance costs, increased treatment efficiency, improved operator safety, and strengthened the long-term reliability of the wastewater treatment plant. #Wastewater #Infrastructure #Florida #WaterInfrastructure #Weston&Sampson #TransformYourEnvironment
