According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), buildings account for approximately 30% of global energy consumption and 26% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. In cities such as Toronto, Boston, New York and Vancouver, buildings can contribute even higher proportions, sometimes exceeding 50% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. Seth Strongin, building decarbonization planning director, has been published by Buildings Magazine, providing specific recommendations for decarbonization practices across North America.
