Meet Alonzo Martinez, P.E., MBA, the New Mexico Transportation Deputy State Lead! Alonzo joined Horrocks four and a half years ago with the opportunity to start and build the Las Cruces office, and since then, the office has grown into a multidisciplinary team of 20 professionals supporting clients and communities across New Mexico. As the Las Cruces office manager, Alonzo wears many hats, from leading one of Horrocks’ fastest-growing offices and mentoring staff to overseeing major transportation projects and building partnerships with local Native American Tribes. "There's a unique sense of fulfillment in working on projects that leave a lasting legacy. Whether it's improving critical infrastructure, helping communities plan for the future, or preserving wildlife and natural resources, the work directly contributes to stronger, more resilient communities," Alonzo shared. "I still enjoy doing engineering, despite having a full plate, and having a great team with strong communication makes it possible to keep doing the work I love." National Disabilities Independence Day is on July 26. Join us in advocating for accessibility in engineering. More than 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. have some form of disability, making accessibility an essential part of designing roads, sidewalks, and transit systems that serve everyone. ”Anything we design has to be compliant, and we don’t run from that,“ said Glenn Blackwelder, Traffic Practice Lead at Horrocks with nearly 7 years of experience educating on accessibility in engineering design. ”Accessibility is a technical challenge worth tackling because it makes for a better society. This is important to Horrocks, and what we do matters.” Horrocks prioritizes accessibility and encourages engineers to consider the people they are designing for from the beginning instead of waiting to add accessibility features later. ”The requirements for accessible design have been improving for decades, but addressing accessibility is still technically difficult and needs to be better,“ said Blackwelder. ”It’s the right thing to do, and people deserve the right to navigate in society. If we can make engineering marvels, why not also make transportation more accessible for those who need it most?” Take a moment today to celebrate accessibility advances with us, and learn more about disability awareness here: https://lnkd.in/ej3Mmyhp
