“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is a certified Criterion title, believe it or not.

The beloved franchise about a beloved occult teen, iconically played by Melissa Joan Hart, is officially amongst the new streaming selections for the Criterion Channel. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” centered on Sabrina (Hart), a high school student who lives with her two aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick) as she navigates coming into her powers. Her cat Salem (Frank Conniff) also provides snarky spiritual guidance.

The ABC-produced franchise was based on the comic book series that debuted in 1971. The “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” show is available to stream on Paramount+ as of 2023.

The 1996 TV movie was a spinoff of the TV series, and was followed by 1998’s “Sabrina Goes to Rome” and 1999’s “Sabrina Down Under.”

Now, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” joins Criterion’s “Witches” programming for October 2024, ushering in the 40-year anniversary of the Criterion platform.

Exclusive: Director and actress Joan Chen has purchased the life rights of Dr. Qin Huilan and Wei-Lai.

Qin Huilan is a 70-year-old, retired doctor who traveled to Shanghai in 2022 to visit her youngest son, Wei-Lai. As the weather got cold, Huilan borrowed a cashmere coat from her son who surprisingly had a closet full of major designer brands, including Prada. Despite the unspoken taboo subject, the two of them formed a new bond over fashion when Wei-Lai encouraged her to begin posting photos in his outfits on social media accounts that he had created for her.

The following grew quickly, and caught the attention of Ashley Brokaw, an American fashion casting director who is known for her work with Prada. Brokaw direct messaged Huilan via Instagram, informing her that she had spoken with Mrs. Prada, and the two of them would love to have Huilan walk in the 2024 MiuMiu Paris Fashion Week show.

Prime Video has no shortage of shows or movies arriving in September. The biggest new show on the block for Amazon Studios is “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” which is a prequel based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien that’s set thousands of years before the events of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings.” Several new 2022 films will be available on the streamer as well: including Channing Tatum’s “Dog,” Michael Bay’s “Ambulance,” Zac Efron’s “Firestarter,” Dylan O’Brien’s “The Outfit,” and more.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).

Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.

Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

We might be stuck indoors this Halloween weekend, but thankfully, the various major streaming services are on hand to keep us occupied with a monumental mountain of new content heading our way over the next few days. With a new month quickly approaching, it’s time to look ahead and see what’s coming to all your favorite streaming services this November. That’s Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and, of course, HBO Max.

Halloween will soon be behind us and given that Christmas isn’t too far off, we’re beginning to see some holiday titles pop up, with all the major platforms getting into the festive spirit. That’ll continue in December as well, of course, but for November, there’s certainly tons on offer for those looking to start the celebrations early.

In a normal year, the biggest film event in May would be the Cannes Film Festival. Now, summer has started with all of its prominent film events canceled or transformed, but Tribeca Enterprises and YouTube have found one way to keep programmers busy. We Are One: A Global Film Festival starts May 29 at YouTube.com/WeAreOne, and continues for 10 days with a slew of films and pre-recorded conversations from 21 festivals. The selections will stream for free on YouTube during their scheduled times.

Of course, it’s easy enough to get lost on YouTube, but the We Are One programming has enough reliable perspectives to make the exploration worthwhile: Participating festivals include Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Toronto, New York, BFI London, Karlovy Vary, and Locarno. While only 13 of the 100 films are world premieres, the lineup provides a diverse window into different curatorial sensibilities, festival events, and filmmaker perspectives.

Tawny Cypress (Unforgettable) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers) have been cast as series regulars in Showtime’s drama pilot Yellowjackets, from writers Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos), Entertainment One and studio-based producer Drew Comins. The pilot, co-produced by eOne and Showtime, goes into production in Los Angeles this fall.

Written by Lyle and Nickerson, Yellowjackets is equal parts survival epic, horror story and coming-of-age drama and relates the narrative of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to warring, cannibalistic clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

The plot and a majority of character roles are being kept under wraps, but in the movie, Jessica Chastain’s title character works for the leader of a black ops organization played by Colin Farrell.

Also in the cast are Oscar winner Common and Oscar nominee John Malkovich. Common plays the ex-fiance to Chastain’s character in the film.

Davis’ credits include Thelma & Louise for which she was nominated for a best actress Oscar, as well as The Fly, Beetlejuice, A League of Their Own, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Stuart Little. Chicago – The number of writers who have adapted and directed their own novels as films is a very small and elite club, and it includes writer/director Allison Burnett. His 2014 film, “Ask Me Anything,” is being released on DVD on March 3rd, 2015, and features Britt Robertson, Justin Long, Christian Slater and Martin Sheen.

“Ask Me Anything” was adapted by Burnett from his 2009 novel “Undiscovered Gyrl,” and is a gritty and multi-layered story of a girl blogger whose truth telling gets in the way of her expectations. One of the Broadway greats has passed away.

Broadway great Elaine Stritch has passed away on Thursday morning. She was 89.

Though the five-time Tony nominee is perhaps best known for her stage presence (Bus Stop, Sail Away, Company), her TV and film resume is also quite impressive.

From 2008-2013, she was nominated for an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy for her role as Colleen Donaghy, the mother of Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock. In 1993, she won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Law & Order.

She's also appeared in two Woody Allen movies, September (1987) and Small Time Crooks (2000). Her other more recent film credits include Monster In Law (2005), Autumn In New York (2000), Screwed (2000) and Out to Sea (1997).

Stritch’s passing was confirmed by her friend Julie Keyes to The New York Times.

Stritch, a Detroit native, made her Broadway debut in 1946 in Jed Harris’ comedy Loco. She went on to earn Tony nominations for her inspired work in William Inge’s Bus Stop (1955), Noel Coward’s Sail Away (1961), Stephen Sondheim’s Company (1970), in which she sang one of her most enduring numbers – “The Ladies Who Lunch,” and Edward Albee play A Delicate Balance (1996). Stritch finally took home a Tony for her one-woman show Elaine Stritch at Liberty in 2001.

I kept fearing "50/50" would take a left turn onto Sappy Boulevard, plod past Preachy Junction and come to a rest in a town populated by "Dying Young," "Autumn in New York" and "Sweet November," where everyone learns pat lessons and becomes better people (except for those who die; those unfortunate folks just help us learn something about ourselves before they pass into the Great Cheesy Beyond).

"50/50" is a movie about cancer, after all, about a young man with the disease. At a certain point star Seth Rogen would have to cease being Seth Rogen, and the whole film would become some Ya version of "Beaches," right?

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Based on writer Will Reiser's own experiences and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young radio producer suffering from a rare form of cancer, "50/50" pulls off the magic trick of staying consistently funny, sweet, affecting and real — and never, ever cheesy.

[1] The first trailer has dropped for Gone, Heitor Dhalia's thriller about a young woman named Jill (Amanda Seyfried) who comes home to find that her sister Molly (Emily Wickersham) has mysteriously vanished. Jill is sure Molly's been kidnapped by the same serial killer Jill escaped from two years prior, but the police aren't convinced -- so Jill takes matters into her own hands to rescue her sister. It's a standard-issue thriller premise, and there's not much about the trailer that really sets Gone apart from dozens of similar movies. (The utterly forgettable, Seo-unfriendly title doesn't help matters, either.) Just a few days ago, we brought you the news from Sony and IMAX about Men In Black III being simultaneously released in IMAX 3D. Now, Sony Pictures Entertainment, IMAX Corporation and Lakeshore Entertainment have announced that the forthcoming installment of the Underworld franchise, Underworld: Awakening starring Kate Beckinsale will also be released in IMAX 3D.

Autumn is the Ringo of the seasons. It often gets overlooked, when set next to the artistic possibilities – cold, new life and heat – offered at other times of year. No other season, certainly, is covered by such a small canon.

John Keats obviously leads the way with To Autumn, a poem which suggests that even in 1819 this was the bridesmaid season. "Thou hast thy music too," Keats protests, lest anyone think spring more worthy of his poetry. What he had not arrived at was the idea that dying leaves could be compared to human sadness. Conviction is a dead-serious awards-tipped real-life courtroom weepie about a man wrongly convicted of murder, who languishes for 18 years in the clink while his devoted sis juggles bar work and single motherhood with a law degree to try and get him out. There's admirable thematic business about the true worth of DNA, and Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell act their socks off as the siblings. The supporting cast is top drawer, too, including a couple of Oscar nominees – Melissa (Frozen River) Leo and Juliette Lewis. (S03E11) Autumn in New York, why does it feel so inviting... That's a great song, and I thought of it while watching the opening of this episode, with the Draper kids all excited about Halloween. And there was also that chill in the air between Don and Betty. Actually, the icy glare was all Betts. She was off to see her brother about selling their father's home, but what was really on Betty's mind was the contents of Don's desk drawer. More on that and gypsy and the hobo, after the jump. Premiere Props announced today that they will be hosting a charity auction of never before seen movie props and costumes from Sony Pictures’ Underworld, Underworld Evolution and the soon to be released Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, which hits theaters everywhere on January 23, 2009.

The auction featuring all three Underworld movies will be presented by Fangoria, DreadCentral.com, ShockTillYouDrop.com and hosted by Leo Quinones, host of 97.1 Talk Radio The Film Freak Show with a special appearance by Miss Horror Fest 2008. The live auction will take place on Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25 at Premiere Props’ warehouse in El Segundo, California (128 Sierra Street, El Segundo, CA 90245) with proceeds to benefit the Entertainment Industry Foundation. There will be a preview from 9am – 11am, and the auction will begin at 11am.

Reclusive Winona Ryder came out to honor Richard Gere in New York on Tuesday night , and referred to the veteran actor as her "favorite person". American Gigolo star Gere was being honored with a Lifetime Achievement gala dinner at the American Museum of the Moving Image. And Ryder, who played Gere's lover in movie flop Autumn In New York, told her former leading man, "It's completely an honor for me to be here to honor you, Richard - my favorite person." But it wasn't such a fun night for the private Gere. He said, "I hate these things, especially when it's focused on me." Ryder wasn't the only celebrity who turned up to honor the 54-year-old - Sharon Stone, Kim Cattrall, Liam Neeson and Denzel Washington were also among the guests.

Lakeshore International president Stephanie Denton has exited the company to join Graham King's Initial Entertainment Group as president of international distribution, sources said. Although King and IEG could not be reached for comment Monday, Denton is already on board at the company while they continue to finalize her deal, sources confirmed. Denton, a longtime exec in the international film world, had been with Lakeshore since 1996. She was promoted to president in January 2001. During her tenure there, she was involved with such films as The Gift, Autumn in New York, Runaway Bride, Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies and The Hunted. Before Lakeshore, she worked at Trans Atlantic Entertainment for two years as director of international sales. Denton started her career at Intercontinental Releasing Corp. and followed that up with sales jobs at Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment and Ulysses Entertainment.

Winona Ryder is revolted by the idea of appearing nude on screen despite her reputation as a stunner. Recently seen starring alongside Richard Gere in Autumn In New York, Winona claims she'd never reveal all, no matter how it might further her career. "I've never felt very sexy," Winona says. "I don't think most directors think of me with sex in mind, which is fine with me because I don't think I'll ever be happy enough with my own body to strip in front of the camera." Despite being brought up by parents with a laid-back attitude to sex and nudity, Winona claims that she's always been a bit of a prude, adding, "I've always been very shy and I'm not comfortable with nudity, even with the guys I have spent time with. It would take an incredible film with a beautiful scene to ever get me to appear naked. And you'd still have to get me to drink a bottle of vodka to do it."...

Autumn in New York (2000) screenwriter Allison Burnett (who, despite being named Allison, is male) has blamed actor Richard Gere for ruining the movie - because he was too conceited. Gere starred opposite Winona Ryder in the romantic tearjerker which has been less than successful in the American box office. But while Gere tried to blame a bad script and a poor co-star for the flop, screenwriter Burnett says it's all his fault. He says, "Richard Gere, like most movie stars, is a narcissistic fool who destroys nearly every movie he touches. He has script approval, which gave him the power to bring in hack re-writers to dismantle Ryder's character and any of the scenes she appeared in without him. He was afraid she'd steal the movie from him. Movie stars are in control of the scripts. The lunatics have the keys to the asylum."...

Richard Gere threw himself into preparation for his latest role by learning to cook. The Buddhist actor who plays one of New York's hottest rising chefs in the upcoming film, Autumn in New York (2000), approached moving through the kitchen with Zen-like enlightenment. He explains, "I learned to be a very good chopper. There's a real Zen quality to chopping. Of course the truth is, I cannot cook. It looks like I know what I'm doing, but I think there's great danger in this. It raises expectations which I don't think I can fulfil in real life."...
