The characters are fabulous and the mystery is so compelling. I'll warn you that some scenes are a bit disturbing, but the author delivers on atmosphere!
I didn't guess the who or the why and loved the way the author kept surprising me.

It’s like, I started thinking that the title, ‘Are you awake?’, was actually just a question being asked to the reader because…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I probably stepped away from this book a dozen times because nothing was happening.
The thing is that I actually liked the characters. The mom, Mary is just so freaking exhausted and I just felt her. Tim seemed like a really good guy and I was so sorry for all he went through. The husband, whose name I can’t recall, was kind of oblivious, but in general an okay guy. But my character like was not enough to sustain me.
The reason behind everything isn’t even all that interesting.

I have to admit that it took me a little bit to enjoy reading Philomena. I sort of wanted her to embrace her gangster-blood and I lost patience with her when it came to how she dealt with her fellow police. I also thought her reactions to Tempe were way too naïve for a woman who really had the experience to know better.
However, I definitely enjoyed the story and was surprised by a lot of what happened!
This was a good read and I’d definitely read the author again.

The author does such a good job of building these two characters and you love both of them, even as you wonder if you really should!
While I did figure out one big reveal way too early, I still enjoyed the chase and definitely enjoyed the way everything panned out.
This was a book I definitely didn’t want to put down and I’ll happily read more from the author!

I loved our characters - and hated a couple, but I was supposed to - and thought the ending worked. It may not be the ending we want, but it's the right ending.
I love Charlie Parker and this is a nice interlude in the series.

This book focuses on Louis, with Charlie being a minor player. While I love Louis and adore Angel, I have to admit that I missed Charlie. While he pops up in the background, and the story hints at some fascinating things to come, I missed the pathos and edge that he brings to the story.
Our story is very violent – it starts heavy and crescendos upward at a furious pace. We also get the introduction of a new dark character who is truly intriguing. I want more of this one.
If I had one complaint it is that I never actually worried for Louis or Angel at all. I needed more of the danger to touch them directly.
Still a very good book. It adds to the series and definitely whets my appetite for the next book!

Don’t get me wrong – he’s entertaining as can be! But he’s got like every abnormal psychological condition rolled up in one.
The rest of the book is gold. We have main characters who live and breathe, a truly fascinating spate of murders, and extremely interesting reasons behind everything. Add to that some perilous situations that leave you breathless – well, you just don’t want to put it down.
Fair warning: the book is gruesome! I mean things are sliced and diced and chopped and stabbed and everything else in graphic detail. So if you like a softer mystery, this isn’t for you. But if you can stand the ick, grab it!
You know those books where you hate everyone? Yep…this is one of those! However, despite my character-hate, I I started out not liking this very much.

Well, it certainly went interesting places!
This book does a lot of very unexpected things. I appreciated that the author kept me guessing almost the whole time – really there was only one mini-reveal that I’d already figured out – and definitely kept me reading! I mean, I did keep reading with a sneer on my face (Outlaw Angry Face!!!) because I really hated these people, but I still enjoyed a very suspenseful read!
