    About Freebuff

Freebuff is an open-source AI coding agent platform that gives developers access to frontier coding models at no cost, funded by text ads. Built by CodebuffAI and released under the Apache License 2.0, it ships five distinct products — Desktop, CLI, Web, Cloud, and Chat — covering the full range of coding workflows from terminal sessions to full-stack app deployment.

    What It Is

Freebuff is a multi-surface AI coding agent suite that replaces paid tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Devin, and Replit with a free alternative. Instead of charging per seat or per token, Freebuff shows text ads during sessions to fund model access. The core platform is open source (Apache-2.0) and built as a TypeScript monorepo using Bun, with orchestration powered by Codebuff — the underlying open multi-agent framework also developed by CodebuffAI.

    Five Products, One Account

Freebuff covers five distinct developer surfaces under a single account:

    • Freebuff Desktop — Run parallel coding agents locally, each in its own isolated workspace, on macOS, Windows, and Linux. No API key or credit card required.
    • Freebuff CLI — Install via npm install -g freebuff and run agents directly from the terminal. The agent reads files, makes edits, and runs checks autonomously.
    • Freebuff Web — A browser-based AI app builder that goes from prompt to a live deployed app on its own URL, with fully managed agentic hosting.
    • Freebuff Cloud — A cloud IDE that connects to any public or private GitHub repository, providing a real sandbox, terminal, editor, and live preview — nothing to install.
    • Freebuff Chat — An AI research and reasoning chat interface positioned as a free alternative to ChatGPT Plus, Perplexity Pro, and Gemini Advanced.

    Model Catalog and Access Tiers

Freebuff includes a curated model catalog with both free and paid-plan models. The free daily allowance is denominated in "Freebucks" — 100 per day — which can be spent across any mix of available models. Models available at full free access include GLM 5.3 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, MiMo 2.6 Flash, Solar Mini 4, and Solar Pro 4. GPT-6 Luna, MiMo 2.6 Pro, and Space Bunny Alpha (a 1M-context stealth model) are also included at full access. Gemini 3.8 Flash and Muse Spark 1.3 are reserved for paid plans. The platform notes that GLM 5.3 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, MiMo 2.6 Flash, Solar Mini 4, and Solar Pro 4 are unmetered at full access and consume no session credit. Freebuff Desktop can also connect to locally installed Claude Code and Codex agents using a user's own provider account.

    How the Agent Architecture Works

Rather than routing every task through a single model and prompt, Freebuff uses specialized sub-agents for different parts of a workflow. File-finding agents map relevant project context before editing begins. Implementation and review agents can divide work, make changes, run commands, and inspect results. Research agents can browse documentation and test applications in a real browser. On Desktop, concurrent agents run in isolated workspaces. On Web and Cloud, sandboxed environments provide terminals, previews, and deployment pipelines.

    Open-Source Lineage and Enterprise Path

The repository (github.com/CodebuffAI/freebuff) is licensed Apache-2.0 and had over 12,900 stars and 1,387 forks as of late 2026, with active pushes. Freebuff is built on Codebuff, an open multi-agent framework that also exposes an @codebuff/sdk npm package for building custom agents or embedding them in other applications. For organizations, Freebuff offers an enterprise path with self-hosted deployment inside a VPC, custom data retention terms, and model catalog customization — positioned as a replacement for per-seat enterprise agreements with tools like Devin, Factory, and Cursor Cloud. Enterprise engagements are scoped per organization and require contacting sales.

    Current Status

The platform is actively developed and in beta as of mid-to-late 2026. Recent launches include Freebuff Desktop, Freebuff Cloud, and the addition of DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and GPT-6 Luna to the free catalog. The homepage reports over 524,000 registered developers and shows a live map of active sessions. The GitHub repository was last pushed in late September 2026. The pricing page notes that model Freebucks costs and daily limits may change during the beta period, but commits that every plan will return more in model spend than it costs.
