Holocaust Remembrance Day and committee meetings, Brussels
Holocaust Remembrance Day. Parliament will hold a special plenary session in Brussels to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 January) and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. EP President Metsola will open the solemn ceremony, followed by the address by Corrie Hermann, who will tell the story of her father, Hungarian cellist and composer Pál Hermann who was murdered by the Nazis in 1944 (Wednesday at 12:00).
Foreign and security policy/Security and defence policy. The Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on the state of EU foreign, security and defence policies, as well as the recommendations of Committee MEPs in these policy areas. The two reports are expected to focus on the war in Ukraine, relations with the US, EU policies towards Russia and China, and the advancement in the EU enlargement process (Thursday).
Human rights. The Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will discuss current global issues related to human rights (Monday). The Foreign Affairs Committee will adopt its annual report on the state of human rights and democracy in the world and EU related measures (Thursday).
Financial support to Moldova. A proposal to set up a Reform and Growth Facility of up to 1,785 bn euros for 2025-2027, to support reforms Moldova is taking as part of its EU membership aspirations, is up for a vote in the Foreign Affairs and Budgets Committees (Thursday).
Priorities of the Polish Presidency. Poland’s ministers will present their priorities in meetings with parliamentary committees. Poland holds the rotating Presidency of the Council until the end of June 2025 (Monday to Thursday).
Security and Defence and Public Health committees. Two new standing parliamentary committees, on Security and Defence and on Public Health, will hold their constitutive meetings to elect their chairs and vice-chairs and start their work (Monday and Wednesday, respectively).
New special committee on Housing Crisis. The new special parliamentary committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union will hold its constitutive meeting to elect their chairs and vice-chairs and launch their activities (Thursday).
President’s diary. On Monday, European Parliament President Metsola will attend the ceremony marking the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz, in Poland. On Tuesday she will be in Berlin, where she will participate in the annual WELT-Wirtschaftsgipfel (“WELT Economic Summit”). On Wednesday President Metsola will receive His Majesty King Abdulla II of Jordan. On Thursday she will travel to Luxembourg to inaugurate the Europa Experience and speak at an event organised by Deloitte Luxembourg.
