A pair of cranes and a couple of herons out back.

Blimey that’s a strident bird call!

They can make a racket Fraggle! Especially during mating/dancing season! They walk around here like they own the place. Regards from Florida

They were certainly not intimidated by that Chow Dog !
I hope that Donald is still around too, Frank?
Best wishes, Pete.

Indeed he is Pete! The dog barks occasionally but the cranes ignore him. The herons are more likely to take flight at sudden barking. Besties

Glad to hear Donald survived all those long beaks! 🙂

Donald lives inside the screened in area, sneaking outside under the screen door only occasionally.

I didn’t realize that you had sandhill cranes there. What a treat. Do they winter there or stay year round?

I live in a semi rural area adjacent to a great swamp and the cranes live here year round. No one bothers them and hunting and fishing in the area is forbidden. Lots of herons, hawks, kites, small birds, and a peacock or two as well as lizards, turtles, armadillos and the occasional gator. They walk around as if they own the place.
It is not unusual to see them outside my lanai or on my morning stroll.
Best regards

Very cool.
In NYC I see mostly pigeons, blue jays and small birds. When I’m in Long Island I see crows, blue jays, cardinals, orioles, woodpeckers and a lot of birds I can’t identify – but nothing like cranes, of course.
I once saw a turkey vulture in Long Island and while it was exciting to see a cool looking, 2 1/2 foot tall bird sitting on rail road tracks up close, it turns out it might not be a good thing because it apparently means they are being forced to enlarge the territory they hunt in. It had stopped to eat a squirrel that had been run over.
Peace.

Heehee. When something gets run over here about, the turkey vultures descend in droves. Best from Florida.

P.S. Of course there are other birds I see in Long Island, but not from my window. I’ve seen hawks, great blue herons, Canada geese and other large birds I can’t identify. 😎 Birds are awesome. Learning to fly was an amazing evolutionary accomplishment.
