The Supreme Court has acquitted a man who spent 22 years in prison after being convicted in a triple murder case in Odisha. A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran criticised both the trial court and the Odisha High Court, saying the conviction was based on unreliable evidence and that the High Court wrongly rejected the prisoner's appeal over a delay of 3,157 days. The court observed that access to justice continues to elude many poor and marginalised citizens and stressed that procedural technicalities should not stand in the way of a fair hearing when personal liberty is at stake.
