Iran has launched a sharp attack on the new Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, with Iranian lawmakers dismissing the pact as a mere “paper agreement.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also issued a cryptic message calling for Muslim countries to unite and rely on themselves, while praising Iran's armed forces for confronting what he called “the world's most expensive military.” The defence pact, signed in Mecca on August 7, includes a collective-defence provision stating that an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three.
