‘Fuel For Free’: Chandigarh’s 'Petrol Langar' Turns Chaotic, Leaves People Fuming

The Centre has sought an early hearing in the Supreme Court on its application seeking clarification on the March 11 judgment concerning the creamy layer criteria for OBCs. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench led by CJI Surya Kant that the government needs two years to frame a policy addressing the court’s observations and the difficulties in retrospective implementation. The Centre said applying the judgment retrospectively could require changes in the status, cadre, post and service of candidates already serving in the civil services, potentially affecting IAS, IPS and IFS officers and creating administrative chaos. It also warned of large-scale representations and litigation involving bodies such as Railways, banks, the postal department and paramilitary forces. The CJI agreed to list the applications on September 1.
