The government's nationwide push for E20 fuel has come under scrutiny after details of an unpublished Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) report surfaced. The study, which reportedly formed the basis for the rollout of E20, found that using the fuel in E10-compatible vehicles could lead to deterioration of rubber fuel-system components such as hoses, seals, gaskets and O-rings, with some parts potentially requiring replacement.The report also flagged durability concerns during testing of one BS-VI turbocharged four-wheeler engine, although experts say multiple factors could contribute to such failures. At the same time, it found no adverse impact on metallic components and said emissions remained within prescribed limits.The study further concluded that vehicles running on E20 consumed 2 to 6 percent more fuel than those using E10, depending on the model. The findings have reignited debate over whether the government adequately disclosed the technical limitations identified in its own reference study while promoting E20 fuel across the country.
