Trade talks between the United States and Canada have broken down, with President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods taking effect after midnight. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa pursued “every opportunity” to reach a deal but ultimately suspended negotiations after the White House introduced what Canada called “unfair” and “uneconomic” last-minute demands.
