Kelly Stafford has never been the type to sugarcoat things. So when she sat down on The Cutting Edge podcast recently, she said something most NFL wives quietly feel but rarely admit out loud. She loved Matthew. She was also deeply unhappy. For more than a decade, her identity had slowly been absorbed into his, and it wasn't until the family packed up and moved to Los Angeles in 2021 that she finally started finding her way back to herself.
How did Kelly Stafford lose her identity after marrying Matthew Stafford?
The couple met at the University of Georgia, dated for nearly seven years, and married in 2015 as Matthew's career with the Detroit Lions was picking up serious momentum. Kelly was present for all of it. The draft. The losses. The seasons that never seemed to go right. She showed up, she supported, and she stood beside him through every public moment.
But somewhere in those Detroit years, something personal got quietly buried.
"You end up being this partner and your image is known as, you know, I was Matthew Stafford's girlfriend and then I was Matthew Stafford's fiancée, Matthew Stafford's wife," Kelly said on the podcast.
"You tend to lose who you are, or I did."
"And so for me, I would remind myself to just stay true to the values. I have a reminder that I can chase after my own goals too; it doesn't just have to be about his. Because again, that was I didn't really come to it until I moved to LA, so 12 years into it."
She wasn't blaming Matthew. She made that clear. But she was honest about how suffocating the weight of someone else's public identity can become, even when you genuinely love them.
"Looking back at Detroit, I would say I was happy because I loved him, but I was also unhappy because I didn't really know where I fit in or who I was," she said.
Matthew, for his part, has spoken openly about how much Kelly has meant to his career. "She's been with me for such a long time," he said. "She's supported me through so many unbelievable moments. We're a great team."
That part was never in doubt. What Kelly was wrestling with was quieter than a rocky marriage. It was the erosion of her own sense of self.
How did the move to LA help Kelly Stafford rediscover who she was?
When the Los Angeles Rams traded for Matthew in March 2021, it turned out to be more than a career change for the quarterback. For Kelly, a new city meant a new chapter she hadn't anticipated.
"The move to LA really helped me realize I can be what I want to be, too," she said. "But I do think you lose yourself in what everyone else expects you to be."
That September, she launched The Morning After with Kelly Stafford out of her home studio, a weekly podcast that quickly built a loyal audience. She later brought on a professional co-host, expanding the show through 2025. The podcast became more than content. It became proof that she had a voice worth hearing on its own terms.

She also reminded herself, consciously, to hold onto something bigger. "I would remind myself to just stay true to the values I have. A reminder that I can chase after my own goals too, it doesn't just have to be about his," she said.
Kelly and Matthew, parents to four daughters, are celebrating ten years of marriage this year. The relationship is strong. But what makes Kelly's story worth paying attention to is that she's being honest about what strength actually costs.
