As the countdown to the IPL 2025, scheduled from March 22 to May 25, begins, franchises announced their retained players, went to the table for their auction picks and for multiple franchises, new captaincy announcements have been made.
The season will get underway at the Eden Gardens with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Two of the playoff matches will take place in Hyderabad while Eden Gardens will be the venue for the all-important second qualifier and the final on May 25.
It will be the first final at Eden Gardens in a decade, with the iconic stadium in Kolkata having previously hosted the 2013 and 2015 title showdowns.
IPL 2025 will have 74 matches spread over 65 days with 12 double-headers. Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans will play three afternoon matches, which start at 3:30pm IST, each, while the other seven teams will play two day matches each.
Beyond the primary home bases of the 10 franchises in the IPL, the 2025 season will also spread its wings towards Guwahati (Royals' second home venue), Visakhapatnam (Capitals' second home venue) and Dharamsala (Punjab's second home venue). Guwahati and Vizag will host two matches each, Dharamsala will be the venue for three matches.
Ever since the IPL expanded to 10 franchises, the teams have been split into two groups. One features KKR, RCB, RR, CSK and PBKS while the other has SRH, DC, GT, LSG and MI. Franchises will meet the other teams in their group and one team in the other group twice, and the other four teams in the opposite group once.
