How international dialing codes work
What a country code is
The 1 to 3 digits you dial before a phone number in another country, such as +44 for the United Kingdom. The ITU assigns every code in its E.164 list.
Exit codes
Before the country code, you dial the exit code of the country you call from: 00 from most of the world, 011 from the US and Canada. On a mobile, + works everywhere.
Call any country from your browser
Call any phone from this tab. Nothing to install on either side, and you pay cents a minute.
Questions about country codes
What is a country code?
A country code is the 1 to 3 digits you dial before a phone number in another country.
The ITU, the United Nations agency for telecoms, gives every country its code in a list called E.164. +44 is the United Kingdom, and +49 is Germany.
A full international number has at most 15 digits, country code included. The first digit of the code shows the part of the world, such as 3 or 4 for Europe.
Which country is this code from?
Type the code in the search at the top of this page. It lists every country that uses the code.
The search takes +234, 00234, or 234. It also takes only the first digits: +2 lists every code that starts with 2.
That first digit is the world zone of the code. Choose a zone to list its countries in the table.
- +1North America and the Caribbean
- +2Mostly Africa
- +3Europe
- +4Europe
- +5Latin America
- +6Southeast Asia and Oceania
- +7Russia and Kazakhstan
- +8East and Southeast Asia
- +9Middle East and the rest of Asia
Which country code is +1?
+1 is the code of the United States, Canada, and 23 other countries and territories.
They share one numbering plan, the North American Numbering Plan. The 3-digit area code after +1 shows which country you call.
+1 876 is Jamaica, and +1 242 is the Bahamas. From the US, a call to them is an international call, even though you dial only 1 before the area code.

What is my country code?
Your country code is the code of the country your phone number is from, not of the country you are in.
A UK number keeps +44 when you travel to Spain, so friends there still dial +44 to reach you.
Search your country at the top of this page, and the Code column shows its code.
How do I dial a country code?
Dial the exit code of the country you call from, then the country code, then the number without its first 0.
From the US to a London landline, that is 011 44 20 7946 0958. Inside the UK, the same number is 020 7946 0958.
From a mobile, type + in place of the exit code. +44 20 7946 0958 then works from every country.

- 2Country code44The United Kingdom

What does + mean in a phone number?
The + stands for the exit code: the digits that take a call out of the country you call from.
A mobile turns + into the right exit code wherever you are. That is why numbers are written with +: then they work from any country.
A landline has no + key, so dial the exit code in its place: 00 from 186 countries, and 011 from the US, Canada, and 24 more.
- 00186 countriesUnited Kingdom, Germany, France
- 01126 countriesUnited States, Canada, American Samoa
- 8105 countriesBelarus, Kazakhstan, Russia
- 00113 countriesAustralia, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands
9 more countries dial other codes, such as 010 from Japan. In 16 countries, such as Brazil, callers also choose a carrier, so there is no one exit code.
Is 011 a country code?
No. 011 is the exit code for calls out of the United States, Canada, and the other +1 countries.
The country code of the United States is +1. A caller abroad dials their own exit code, then 1, then the 10-digit number.
From the UK, a call to a New York number starts 00 1 212. The 212 is a Manhattan area code.
Is a country code the same as an area code?
No. The country code picks the country, and the area code picks a region inside it.
In +44 20 7946 0958, 44 is the United Kingdom and 20 is London. Inside the UK, callers put 0 in front: 020 7946 0958.
Some countries, such as Singapore, have no area codes at all. On +1, the area code also shows the country.
What is the difference between a country code and an ISO code?
You dial a country code, and you write an ISO code.
The ISO 3166 standard gives each country a 2-letter and a 3-letter code, such as DE and DEU for Germany. Forms, passports, and web addresses use them: .de is Germany's.
The letters do not always match the English name. Switzerland is CH, from its Latin name, and the United Kingdom is GB.
