Product and captions
Where does subtitle.im work?
It is a Chrome extension for YouTube. It manages YouTube captions that you can switch on or off. Other sites, mobile browsers and local video files are outside its current scope.
How do I turn off subtitles on YouTube? Why does one layer remain?
Click CC in the YouTube player to turn off switchable captions. Burned-in subtitles are part of the video image, so CC cannot remove them. subtitle.im detects these subtitles and handles duplicate captions according to your settings. A manual CC change stops automatic adjustment for this viewing without changing saved rules.
How do I turn on subtitles on YouTube automatically?
Click CC in the YouTube player to turn on available subtitles. Enable automatic caption opening in subtitle.im to repeat this when you play a video with an available track. If no track is available, the extension cannot generate or translate subtitles.
What if burned-in subtitles and YouTube captions use different languages?
With enough evidence of burned-in subtitles in another language, it follows your choice: close automatically, ask first or keep the switchable captions. Choose keep if you want both languages visible.
Can it detect burned-in subtitles in every video?
It can generally detect most clear, common burned-in subtitles, though misses and false positives can occur. Low resolution, unusual placement or complex lettering can reduce accuracy. When evidence is insufficient it keeps switchable captions; if they are hidden by mistake, undo from the prompt or turn YouTube CC back on.
Are video frames uploaded?
Subtitle OCR runs locally in your browser; video frames and subtitle text are not uploaded. The free allowance stays with this installation and needs no email. Sign-in, extension connections and purchases process only the information needed for those tasks.
Installation and connection
How do I install subtitle.im?
Follow our installation guide to the Chrome Web Store, install subtitle.im, and open a YouTube video to try it free. No email is required.
Do I need an account for free use? How do I sign in for Pro?
Free use needs no account. To buy or restore Pro, sign in with Google, GitHub or an email code. No separate website password is needed.
What if my email code does not arrive?
Check your address, inbox and spam folder. Codes last 10 minutes. You can resend after the page countdown ends without waiting for expiry; use the newest code after resending.
How do I connect the extension?
Click Restore Pro access in the extension and sign in on the website with your purchase account. An existing sign-in is restored and the connection is approved automatically, with no pairing code or extra confirmation. Return to the extension and check its connected and Pro status. Requests expire after 15 minutes; start a new one from the extension if needed.
Handling and recovery
Why were duplicate captions not turned off?
Check that YouTube CC has an available, enabled track and review the extension's duplicate-caption setting. Low image quality, subtitle placement or insufficient evidence may make it keep captions. You can detect again on this video or use CC yourself.
How do I restore captions hidden by mistake?
Use Undo or Restore in the extension prompt, or turn YouTube CC back on. Restoration affects this viewing only and does not remove burned-in subtitles from the image.
Is a manual YouTube CC change remembered?
It does not create a persistent video or channel rule. Manual CC takes priority over automatic handling for this viewing only; next time, saved rules and settings apply again.
How do channel and video rules work?
Pro lets you set channel rules and exceptions for individual videos. Priority is manual CC for this viewing, video rule, channel rule, then global settings. Manual CC and Undo never silently create rules.
Allowance and license
How are the 10 free videos counted?
Each installation includes 10 different free videos. Only successful caption closures count; detection, failed recognition, manual CC changes and rewatches do not.
How many videos can I process with Free and Pro?
Free includes 10 different videos in total, with no monthly reset. Pro has no video-count limit. Detection still depends on the video image, caption language and actual recognition results.
How do Free and Pro differ?
Free lets you try core caption handling within its allowance. Pro adds ongoing automatic handling, channel and video rules, and memory of confirmed closures. Pro Annual and Pro Lifetime have the same features and differ in billing and duration.
How do I recover an existing license?
If you purchased Pro, verify with the email used for purchase on My License to view or restore access. Restoring access does not reset the free allowance.
