What is actually creative writing? I mean, is it actually following the traditional writing style or following the modern style of writing? Or is it just simply following your passion? In the world of English literature, there are a lot of things that someone can explore and someone can be thrilled by and deep dive into. Well, the answer is not that simple unless and until you try. It can also be a good way to explore your potential as well. It is definitely worth giving it a try as a student literature. After all, what is literature? If you just can not deep down into yourself to know what you are capable of. You may not be good enough; someone may not understand what you are trying to express. But it is definitely worth it to give it a try.
In the last winter semester, with Dr. Ross, I tried creative writing. It was definitely fun. He was a jolly guy who always tried to uplift our mood by his sarcasm. Apart from it, I also tried to express myself, even though I sometimes feel like people barely understand me. It happened here too. I wrote sonnets and haikus in my creative writing class. Dr. Ross just could not grasp my ideas, what I was trying to say. Horrible, isn’t it? Even I also know that I am not a great writer. Still motivated? Still not ready to say that your writing is bad? Well, not in my eyes. The good thing is that I tried. I wrote sonnets about the girls, and I showed the writings to them, and they felt joy that I wrote something about them. It does not really matter whether I have written something extraordinary or something creative. The girls felt joy; that’s what mattered to me. Infact, if you find it faulty, you may have a great laugh after a bad day!
So, after all this, to me, what does creative writing stand for? It stands for telling my tales in a creative way, expressing my love and passion, and translating my emotions to others in a grand way, irrespective of my errors and blunders. I have tried to express myself in both traditional and modern styles. I have also tried in my own ways as well. It gave me joy, and I felt love through my expressions. I felt what expressing love is, especially when you are expressing yourself in an artistic way.
So, Here are my writings.
I tried haikus. A Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry, typically consisting of three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable structure. Haikus often capture fleeting moments in nature, emotions, or philosophical reflections in a concise and beautiful way. However, I tried freestyle haikus mostly. Our professor has encouraged us to be more expressive than strictly following rules. I hope you will like it.
Sonnets are extraordinary. A sonnet is a 14-line poem written in iambic pentameter, often exploring themes like love, beauty, and mortality. Sonnets follow a structured rhyme scheme and typically present a problem or thematic shift.
There are three main types of sonnets:
Spenserian Sonnet – Similar to the Shakespearean sonnet but with a more complex rhyme scheme: ABAB BCBC CDCD EE.
Petrarchan (Italian) Sonnet – Divided into an octave (8 lines) and a sestet (6 lines) with a rhyme scheme of ABBA ABBA CDE CDE.
Shakespearean (English) Sonnet – Consists of three quatrains (4 lines each) and a final couplet (2 lines) with a rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
Even though there are different types of sonnets, I tried normal Shakespearean sonnets in my class.
I also tried other types of poetry. It is my type of poetry………….
I also tried a short story in the class; it was a mixture of postcolonialism and postmodernism where the protagonist is baffled by the realities that he is going through simultaneously.
