Open Source Windows Vibe Coding Tools

OpenAI Codex CLI is a lightweight, open-source coding assistant that runs directly in your terminal, designed to bring ChatGPT-level reasoning to your code workflows. It allows developers to interactively query, edit, and generate code within their repositories, all while maintaining version control. The CLI can scaffold new files, run code in sandboxed environments, install dependencies, and commit changes automatically, streamlining chat-driven development. It supports various approval modes—from suggestion-only to full automation—ensuring safe and controlled code execution. Codex CLI can also handle multimodal inputs like screenshots and diagrams to implement features intelligently. The tool includes built-in sandboxing & security measures, such as network restrictions and directory confinement, to protect your system during code execution. With extensive configuration options, including multiple AI providers and custom guidance files, it fits seamlessly into developer environments.

Zed is a next-generation code editor designed for high-performance collaboration with humans and AI. Written from scratch in Rust to efficiently leverage multiple CPU cores and your GPU. Integrate upcoming LLMs into your workflow to generate, transform, and analyze code. Chat with teammates, write notes together, and share your screen and project. Multibuffers compose excerpts from across the codebase in one editable surface. Evaluate code inline via Jupyter runtimes and collaboratively edit notebooks. Support for many languages via Tree-sitter, WebAssembly, and the Language Server Protocol. Fast native terminal tightly integrates with Zed's language-aware task runner and AI capabilities. First-class modal editing via Vim bindings, including features like text objects and marks. Zed is built by a global community of thousands of developers. Boost your Zed experience by choosing from hundreds of extensions that broaden language support, offer different themes, and more.

Dyad is a free, local, open source AI app builder that lets you go from idea to full-stack application entirely on your machine, no coding required, just chat with AI. You can build unlimited apps with real-time previews, instant undo, and responsive, frictionless workflows. Deep Supabase integration means you can create UI and backend logic in one cohesive environment, while the model-agnostic architecture lets you connect to any AI, whether cloud-based (Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-4.1, Claude Sonnet 4) or local via Ollama, so you’re never locked in. All source code remains on your device and integrates seamlessly with your preferred IDE. A natural-language API enables powerful data queries and updates, automating tasks without leaving the chat interface. By running entirely locally, Dyad delivers maximum privacy, minimal latency, and smooth developer experiences free from cloud-based inconsistencies.

Cursor is an AI code editor based on OpenAI GPT models. You can write, edit and chat about your code with it. At this time, Cursor is only provided as a dedicated app, and the team currently has no plans to develop extensions for other editors or IDEs.

Stardrive is a batteries-included Astro boilerplate built for the AI age. It skips the first 36 steps of creating a high-class website, giving you a fast, secure, accessible, and SEO-optimized foundation without reinventing the wheel. What makes it special: it is LLM-friendly by design, with dedicated AI guidance files so coding assistants immediately understand the project. It also prepares your site for WebMCP, auto-populates an llms.txt, and generates Schema.org structured data automatically. Out of the box: powerful blog, Markdown-driven events with Add to Calendar buttons, full i18n, light/dark mode, configurable pricing table, WCAG-ready accessibility, and a thousand SEO and GEO tweaks. Fully typed, TailwindCSS, ESLint, Prettier, Cloudflare-ready. Create a new project with npm create stardrive@latest and let an AI agent configure it for you — or fork the repository and make it your own.

Dev Janitor is an open-source developer productivity tool designed to automatically clean up stale, unused, or poorly maintained code patterns in a codebase, helping teams keep their repositories tidy without consuming engineering time manually pruning technical debt. The tool analyzes project files and identifies opportunities to perform cleanup tasks such as removing dead imports, fixing outdated syntax, simplifying redundant expressions, and consolidating duplicated logic, all while observing established conventions for the languages it supports. Through a pluggable rule system, it allows teams to enforce their own style guides or cleanup policies, enabling tailored automation that fits each codebase’s unique needs. It is built for integration into continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines or pre-commit workflows, so cleanup suggestions can be surfaced and applied incrementally rather than as a massive refactor.

Quint Code is a structured reasoning and decision-support framework aimed at making AI-assisted software engineering and decision workflows more rigorous and auditable. It implements the First Principles Framework (FPF) to guide users and AI tools through hypothesis generation, logical verification, evidence gathering, and documented decision making, reducing reliance on ad hoc or “vibe” coding. Instead of accepting the first plausible answer generated by an AI assistant, Quint Code encourages generating multiple competing hypotheses, verifying them, and validating them against real evidence stored in a structured “knowledge base” within your project. It supports a cycle of abduction, deduction, and induction backed by CLI commands (like /q1-hypothesize, /q2-verify, /q3-validate, etc.) that create a persisting audit trail in a .quint/ directory.

gpt-engineer is an open-source platform designed to help developers automate the software development process using natural language. The platform allows users to specify software requirements in plain language, and the AI generates and executes the corresponding code. It can also handle improvements and iterative development, giving users more control over the software they’re building. Built with a terminal-based interface, gpt-engineer is customizable, enabling developers to experiment with AI-assisted programming and refine their development process. It is especially useful for automating the coding and iterative feedback loop in software development.
