GnuCOBOL (formerly OpenCOBOL) is a free, modern COBOL compiler. GnuCOBOL implements a substantial part of the COBOL 85, X/Open COBOL and newer ISO COBOL standards (2002, 2014, 2023), as well as many extensions included in other COBOL compilers (IBM COBOL, MicroFocus COBOL, ACUCOBOL-GT and others). GnuCOBOL translates COBOL into C and internally compiles the translated code using a native C compiler. The RecordEditor is a Data File editor for Flat Files (delimited and fixed field position). It supports Unix / PC / Legacy (e.g. Mainframe) file formats, both Text and binary files. The Editor uses a Record-Layout description to format the files. This is ideal for Fixed width (Text or Binary) files, Cobol Data Files, Mainframe files and complicated Csv files. Cobol Copybooks can be used to format Cobol Data files. As well as an editor, The following utilities are supplied * Formatted Compare * File Copy and reformat Utility * FileWizard this is use to work out the format of a File. It can generally find both Text and binary / packed deicimal fields in a file For Simple Csv you should look at its sister project reCsvEditor. This project has moved to GitHub ! The version here at SourceForge will remain for historic purpose. Koopa is a parser generator, made for COBOL. It can handle source files in isolation (no preprocessing required) and doesn't mind the presence of CICS/SQL fragments. The grammar is easily extensible in a way which minimizes the impact on the overall code.

Coboldoc is a java web 2.0 style interface for analyzing COBOL. It maintains its own cross reference database for static & dynamic calls to help with impact analysis or for general COBOL surfing. It's also designed to run directly on z/OS

RES is a pure Java based Open Source Cobol to Java translator. It creates maintainable Java code for a subset of VS Cobol syntax. It has been developed with JDK, JTB and Javacc.

CobXRef is a Cobol cross reference tool that reads a Cobol source program and produces a file suitable for printing 'as is' that contains all variables, procedure paragraphs and section names referenced where they are defined as well as where they are used throughout the program or module as well as lists of unreferenced data names and paragraph & section names. it is used as a stand alone program. This version includes the code from printcbl which takes in the copy books when used by any COPY verbs in the source. See the readme file for more info. This program is intended to process an XML formatted file of data in one pass rather than record by record. The program does not handle "Attributes".

OpenFileAid is aimed to help people working with COBOL Copybooks and flat files, such as the orginal IBM FileAid. It allows to parse and load CopyBooks, to map the content of flat files to the fields of CopyBooks, to Intitialize CopyBooks...

Smallest possible is a curated repository whose aim is somewhat playful yet useful: collecting the “smallest possible syntactically valid files” across a large variety of programming, scripting, markup, and binary file types. For example, the repository might include the minimal valid HTML file, minimal valid PDF, minimal valid executable, minimal valid image file, and so on. It serves both as a curiosity and as a utility for developers and testers who might need tiny stub files for testing tooling, parsing, or file-type handling. Because each file targets minimal syntactical correctness, the repository is valuable for edge-case testing (e.g., parsers handling smallest valid inputs). The project is open, community-welcoming (pull requests accepted) and carries a public-domain style waiver by the author. Although specialized, its uniqueness lies in spanning many file types and languages uniformly under the “minimal valid” idea.

Add-on for the WSDL2... utility from the Apache Axis project, this utility will read WSDL files and generate COBOL copybooks and source code appropriate for marshalling and unmarshalling XML messages.
