Open Source Desktop Operating Systems Networking Software

VirtualBox is a powerful open-source full virtualization software that allows a user to run one or more “guest” operating systems simultaneously inside “virtual machines” on a single physical “host” machine. It supports a wide variety of host platforms (Linux, Windows, macOS, Solaris, etc.) and guest OSes, enabling, for example, running Linux on a Windows PC, running Windows Server on a Linux host, or even legacy OSes in a controlled environment. This flexibility makes VirtualBox ideal for developers, testers, sysadmins, or hobbyists who need different OS environments, want to test software across systems, or need isolation for development, sandboxing, or security experiments. VirtualBox offers both a user-friendly GUI as well as a command-line interface and headless mode, making it useful for desktop usage as well as server or automated environments.

Valhala Honeypot is an easy to use honeypot for the Windows System. The software have the following services: http (web), ftp, tftp, finger, pop3, smtp, echo, daytime, telnet and port forwarding. Some services are real, others are a simulation.

Raddle is a network emulation framework. It is particularly useful when testing network management systems or teaching people to use them. Raddle supports ping, SNMP, traceroute, and other protocols.

Instead of requiring cygwin and all it's dependencies, I'm going to build Dynamips on MinGW. I am currently using a fork of the latest GIT source. So far, I've been able to run things that I can run with the Cygwin version, and some of the broken features are on par. I've also been able to merge in the 'unstable' PowerPC core which can run things the 'stable' cannot. Transport wise, I've gotten it to talk with pcap and UDP. I have the groundwork to make it dynamic so that pcap isn't required to run it, so you can run dynamips without installing anything. I hope to add some different underlying networking connections.
