AI UGC for mobile apps: what's allowed, and what to use for what

AI UGC for apps is marketing content in the style of a real user's post, made with AI characters instead of paid creators. The format works for an app when the character acts out the problem, the post is labeled as AI, and nobody pretends to be a customer. Talking-head video ads need different tools, named below.

Part of: Instagram marketing for indie apps

Slide-Easy, a Mac app for indie app makers, makes that kind for Instagram, for $49 once.

What is AI UGC for apps?

"UGC" means user-generated content: posts that look like they came from a person, not a brand. AI UGC makes that look with AI people. For apps, it comes in three shapes:

What's allowed, and what isn't?

Labeled AI characters that act out a problem are allowed. Fake customers aren't. In the US, the FTC's questions and answers on its reviews rule say: "The rule has no blanket prohibition on the use of AI-generated avatars in marketing." The same rule bans reviews and testimonials that "misrepresent that they are by someone who does not exist, such as AI-generated fake reviews" (FTC, August 2024).

The EU AI Act (Article 50, from 2 August 2026), New York's synthetic-performer law (from 9 June 2026), India's ASCI and the UK's ASA all point the same way: disclose AI people, never pass them off as real users. The full rundown, with Meta's and TikTok's labels, is in Is AI UGC legal? Guidance, not legal advice.

What Slide-Easy makes, and what it won't

Slide-Easy's Faces screen: seven AI characters, each with a name, a personality line and a count of styles
The Faces screen in Slide-Easy. Every one of these people is an AI character.

It won't make lip-synced talking-head avatars, testimonials, "I used it and…" lines, before-and-after promises, or posts with anyone else's face. Every post is checked for testimonials, medical and money promises before you see it. It posts to Instagram only; TikTok isn't supported yet.

Want talking-head video ads? Use one of these

If what you need is an AI actor reading a script to camera for paid ads, Slide-Easy is the wrong tool. These are built for it:

Whichever you use, the rules above still apply: label the AI person, and don't let them claim to be a customer.

The trade-off: Slide-Easy needs an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or newer), macOS 15 or later, 16 GB of memory, and a one-time model download (about 14 GB). Your Mac does the work, about 3 minutes a post on an M4 Pro. First 7 posts are free. If you'd rather not do it yourself, I make 7 posts a week for your app as a done-for-you service at $299 a month.

AI UGC FAQ

What is AI UGC for mobile apps?

Marketing content in the style of a real user's post, made with AI characters instead of paid creators. For an app, the useful kind shows the problem your app solves, is labeled as AI, and never presents the character as a customer.

Is AI UGC legal?

Yes, when it's disclosed and doesn't fake a customer. The FTC says its fake-review rule has no blanket ban on AI avatars in marketing, but it bans reviews and testimonials that pretend to come from someone who doesn't exist. The EU, New York, India's ASCI and the UK's ASA also expect AI people in ads to be disclosed.

Does Slide-Easy make talking-head video ads?

No. It makes photo-style posts, carousels, stories and voiced Reels built from your app's real screens, for an organic Instagram page. For lip-synced AI actors speaking to camera, tools like Arcads, MakeUGC or HeyGen are built for that.

Does Instagram allow AI characters?

Yes, labeled. Since 31 August 2026, Instagram limits the reach of profiles built around an AI-generated person unless they carry the "AI-generated profile" label. Labeled ones aren't penalized.

Can it use my face?

Yes, your own face only, on a Mac with 24 GB of memory. Never anyone else's.
