I’m Andromeda Romano-Lax, author of seven novels and various nonfiction titles. Thanks for checking out my Substack.
Born in Chicago and now a resident of Vancouver Island, Canada, I worked as a freelance journalist and travel writer before turning to fiction. My first novel, The Spanish Bow, was translated into eleven languages and chosen as a New York Times Editors’ Choice, BookSense pick, and one of Library Journal’s Best Books of the Year. My next four novels, The Detour, Behave (an Amazon Book of the Month), Plum Rains (winner of the Sunburst Award), and Annie and the Wolves reflect my interest in the arts, history, science, and technology, as well as my love of travel and time spent living abroad.
Starting with The Deepest Lake (an Amazon Book of the Month and Barnes & Noble Monthly Pick) and continuing with my next novel, What Boys Learn (January 2026) I swerved into the world of suspense fiction, although I continue to write historical and speculative fiction as well. (I’m also tiptoeing into horror.)
This is my author and book coaching newsletter, FROM MY ISLAND TO YOURS. In it, I share behind the scenes looks at a life spent writing, publishing books, and following my interests wherever they take me. I love being candid with readers and writers about the ins and outs of surviving as a writer—often, too candid! As a book coach and sometimes MFA mentor, I demystify wherever I can, and I love supporting other people who share my love of words, learning, and adventure.

A late-blooming Ironman triathlete, I live with my family on a small island off a bigger island in British Columbia, where my favorite activities are trail running, cycling, and ocean swimming year-round. (Yes, it’s cold. I’m trying to get used to it!)
