Description
You’ve come this far… How do you move your career forward from here?
Once you reach middle to senior level in your profession, you require different skills to allow you not only to carry out your day-to-day role effectively and positively, but to also continue your career progression and fulfil your potential.
Simply being technically proficient and having expert knowledge isn’t enough any more. You need to develop other capabilities related to communicating, engaging with others and dealing with every professional scenario effectively and confidently.
This book will help you master these skills to successfully navigate your current role and prepare for your next, so that you can increase your job satisfaction and progress your career.
Joanna Gaudoin helps bright, knowledgeable people with great technical skills and experience improve their non-technical skills, so they progress their careers and boost their firm’s performance. She has run her business for over a decade and has worked with thousands of people, both individually and in groups. Now she wants to help YOU stand out and develop the skills you need to succeed.

I would encourage anyone, at any point in their career, even if senior, to read this book. You’ll be surprised about how the seemingly small things you’re doing (or not!) have a huge impact on how you are perceived and how you are managing your career.

Joanna has a way of showing you things about yourself that seem obvious afterwards, but we sometimes miss because we can’t see the wood for the trees. I would encourage anyone, at any point in their career, even if senior, to read this book. You’ll be surprised about how the seemingly small things you’re doing (or not!) have a huge impact on how you are perceived and how you are managing your career.

Joanna has created, in a relatively compact read, some compelling guidance and valuable development gems for professionals at any stage of their career. One of my main take aways is how important it is to plan regular time to invest in my own and my team’s development and then actually act. I wish I had read this book years ago but it is never too late to learn – the honesty, practical exercises and reflection suggestions will bring me back to this book and specifically the relevant chapters again and again.

This is the guide to turbo charge your career – it’s super accessible and assists you with guides for improving your skills like building your networks, presenting yourself and developing your team with such practical nuggets. I’ll be returning to its insights time and time again and can’t over- state how impressive and useful this will be to anyone wanting to develop their career. I’d highly recommend it.

A thoughtful and practical guide to topics at the heart of career success. Getting On: Making work work sets out how success in the workplace relies, in large part, on our ability to develop and manage successful relationships. This includes our relationship with self and how to maintain and enhance our personal impact throughout our working lives. Joanna has translated my experience of her as an effective practitioner into a meaningful outline of case studies of individuals maximising their impact at work. Her book provides that rare balance of a breadth of theoretical references with pragmatic tips, and is one of those texts that offers practical wisdom on page after page.
Tony Wright, Director of Administration, UK & Workplace Experience, Latham & Watkins
We know that excelling on the job, doesn’t mean that a successful career will follow – but we don’t always understand why. In Getting On: Making work work, Joanna reminds us to be rigorous in our self-analysis and hone the skills we need to rev our career engine. It’s pragmatic, thought provoking and encourages self-reflection with valuable insights for everyone, no matter what stage your career.
Unette Spencer, Chief of Staff to Executive Vice Chair, Mastercard
Ever wondered why you’re not progressing as you want in your career? This is a rare, comprehensive and very read- able resource to help you with understanding yourself, the sometimes confusing world of work relationships and how to approach things differently. I wish I had been able to read it earlier.

In this book, Joanna shares her wealth of experience in helping people to progress their careers. There are so many aspects that you might never think of, from how you dress and the first impressions you create, right through to managing office politics and your online presence. Each section offers many useful suggestions and worksheets that you can use to put them into practice. I think anyone who wants to make the most of their career and to be able to navigate the challenges working life brings will benefit from reading the book.
Amanda Cullen, Board Effectiveness Specialist and former senior manager in financial services
Working with Joanna is truly eye opening. She is highly skilled at helping to reveal what is hiding in plain sight. In this book, she leads you through the steps needed to enable you to honestly review yourself in order to identify the personal actions needed to navigate workplace challenges and push your career to the next level.
Amber Jefferys, Chief Administrative Officer, shipping sector
What I like most about this book is how it covers so many different topics but is so easy to read and offers such simple and practical advice alongside the theory for today’s work- place. It therefore gives you a ‘helicopter view’ of all the individual elements of working life and how they impact and build upon each other. Having it all in one place somehow makes things make sense – very often, books focus on just one aspect, which ascribes to that element disproportionate importance and can therefore be unhelpful. I like the fact that the chapters on the different topics are all pretty evenly weighted, which implies that everything matters and you can’t just focus on one thing.
I found the chapter on office politics fascinating – I had never really thought about it in a positive way before!
There is definitely something for everyone in this book, from someone looking to take the next step up on their career journey to a senior manager who just wants to learn how to approach things more effectively in a changing work environment, or someone wondering whether their current role is right for them. I can see myself dipping into it at regular intervals to remind me of specific things at particular times and I know that I will take something different from it each time, depending on where I am and what challenges I am facing.
Even where I feel that I already know the theory, being reminded of it and having it explained with some practical steps for how to adapt is useful and the actions that Joanna suggests actually feel achievable. When I have read other books of a similar nature, I have often found myself feeling demoralised and overwhelmed by how big a shift I apparently need to make, whereas the actions/tools in this book are broken down into smaller, more incremental stages that encourage experimentation. I have already put some into practice – for example, the chapter on meetings and the tips on managing virtual interactions – and they worked!

For all those of you who are told that your career is in your hands and you are in the driving seat, but desperately need tools and handholding, look no further. Joanna’s new book is a mine of practical steps and tools that will help you navigate that journey. My personal favourites are tips for ‘disagreeing agreeably’ and ‘navigating di cult conversations’. Whether you are looking to break the proverbial glass ceiling, navigating a career turning point or climbing the ladder at your own pace, Getting On: Making work work is a one-stop shop for working through personal branding and managing relationships and communication styles to accelerate your upward trajectory.
Jyothi Menon, Cybersecurity Delivery Lead, large global bank
Joanna has always presented thought-provoking seminars and workshops full of useful help and advice. Regardless of your levels of experience and seniority, she has a gift for both reminding you what you have forgotten and teaching you something new. This book is typical of her approach, providing a concise yet thorough guide to how to establish and develop your personal brand while navigating a path to career success. Easily readable, it offers helpful tips for career starters and seasoned professionals alike, with bite- sized nuggets of advice and handy exercises and section summaries.
