LGBTQ+ College Student Guide
LGBTQ students have a significant presence on college campuses. In 2018, an Association of American Universities survey of over 180,000 university students found that 16.9% of students identify as non-heterosexual. While many colleges try to make their campuses welcoming to LGBTQ students, their success rate varies. If you’re a prospective college student who identifies as LGBTQ+, it’s important that you research schools to make sure they’ve created a supportive environment. In this guide, you’ll learn how to research colleges and review additional topics such as the unique challenges LGBTQ students face and the resources and legal rights available to them.

Washington County Gay Straight Alliance Inc.
Who We Are
The Washington County Gay Straight Alliance, Inc. is a 501 (C) (3) Organization that facilitates and provides resources for a peer group of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Questioning, Queer, Asexual, and Allied (LGBTQA) youth. The organization also hosts 2nd Friday Nights Potluck, a monthly social gathering for the LGBTQA community of all ages. It is an unfortunate reality that in small towns and rural areas like Washington County there are not as many social opportunities or healthy lifestyle resources available to our youth and the LGBTQA population in general. The WCGSA provides some of these opportunities and is evolving to meet the growing need to do more.
Our Mission
Washington County Gay Straight Alliance, Inc. is dedicated to affirming acceptance between diverse groups of people, raising awareness in our community of the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Questioning, Queer, Asexual, and Allied (LGBTQA) people through support, education, and community outreach on the issues of diversity. WCGSA, Inc. provides a safe, confidential environment for individuals of Washington County and the surrounding areas regardless of sex, race, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.
