Frequently asked questions
What does well formed mean?
Every tag closes, tags nest without overlapping, there is exactly one root element, and reserved characters are escaped. It is the minimum a parser needs.
Is well formed the same as valid?
No. Well formed is about syntax; valid means it also conforms to a DTD or an XSD schema. A document can be perfectly well formed and still wrong.
Why does an ampersand break my XML?
Because & starts an entity reference. A bare ampersand in text has to be written & or the parser stops at that character.
Does the position it reports mean the error is there?
It is where the parser gave up, which is often after the real mistake. An unclosed tag is usually reported at the point something else closed unexpectedly.
