Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about creating and hosting your murder mystery party.
Getting Started
Everything you need to know before creating your mystery
How long does a murder mystery party take?
A typical murder mystery party runs 2-3 hours, broken into 3 acts. Act 1 introduces characters and the crime (30-45 min), Act 2 is investigation and accusations (45-60 min), and Act 3 is the big reveal and solution (30-45 min). You can adjust pacing based on your group.
How many people do you need for a murder mystery party?
Our mysteries are designed for 8-20 players. We offer three size options: Small (8-12 players with 8 essential + 4 optional characters), Medium (13-16 players with 13 essential + 3 optional characters), and Large (17-20 players with 17 essential + 3 optional characters). Each mystery includes optional characters that can be added or removed to fit your exact guest count.
Do guests need to memorize scripts or lines?
No memorization required. Each guest receives a character card with their persona, motivations, and secrets. They play naturally based on their character's goals—no scripted dialogue. This makes it more like a game than a performance, so even shy guests can participate comfortably.
What if some guests have never played a murder mystery before?
That's totally fine. The Host's Guide includes a brief explanation to read aloud at the start, and each character card explains what the player needs to know. First-timers often become the most enthusiastic players because they approach it fresh.
Is the mystery appropriate for all ages?
Our standard mysteries are designed for adults and contain mature themes like blackmail, affairs, and fictional violence (the murder itself). For family events, we can adjust content to be family-friendly while keeping the intrigue intact. Just mention this when creating your mystery.
Hosting Your Party
Tips for running a successful murder mystery event
What does the host need to do during the party?
The host acts as the game master: reading announcements between acts, distributing evidence at the right moments, keeping time loosely, and revealing the solution at the end. The Host's Guide walks you through everything step-by-step. Most hosts find it's actually less work than a regular party because guests entertain themselves.
Can the host also play a character?
Yes, but we recommend the host plays a non-essential character (not the murderer or a key witness). This lets you step away to manage the game when needed. Alternatively, assign a co-host to handle logistics while you play fully.
What if a guest cancels last minute?
Every mystery includes Redistribution Cards that explain how to handle absent characters. Key information gets distributed to remaining players, and the mystery remains fully solvable. We design for real-world party chaos.
Do I need costumes or decorations?
Costumes and decorations are optional but add to the atmosphere. We include a Physical Props List with suggestions for your specific theme and era. Even simple touches—dim lighting, themed music, a few props—can elevate the experience. But the mystery works perfectly without any extras.
What about food and drinks?
We recommend finger foods or a buffet that guests can graze on during the game. Sitting down for a formal meal breaks momentum. Many hosts do appetizers during Act 1, main course during Act 2 (while accusations fly), and dessert after the reveal. Theme your menu to match your mystery era for extra flair.
Customization
How to personalize your mystery
Can I customize the character names and backstories?
Absolutely—that's the whole point. You can name characters after your actual friends, create inside jokes, reference real group dynamics, and specify personality traits. The more details you provide, the more personalized the mystery becomes.
What themes and time periods are available?
Any theme you can imagine. Popular choices include 1920s Prohibition speakeasies, Victorian England mysteries, modern corporate intrigue, Hollywood glamour, Wild West saloons, and 1950s noir. You can also create completely custom settings—a space station, a Renaissance fair, a zombie apocalypse survivor camp. We build to your vision.
Can I specify who the murderer is?
You can suggest preferences or even request a specific person be the murderer. We'll build a logical plot around your choice. Just remember not to tell the actual player—the murderer learns their own guilt through their secret card, just like everyone else.
What if I want to include real events or inside jokes?
We encourage it. The best mysteries reference actual group dynamics, running jokes, and memorable events (fictionalized, of course). Mention these when creating your mystery, and we'll weave them into the plot and evidence.
