Awaken is a 5th-level bard and druid spell that permanently gives a beast or plant an Intelligence of 10 and the ability to speak one language you know. It takes 8 hours to cast and consumes an agate worth at least 1,000 gp. The target must be Huge or smaller and have an Intelligence of 3 or less, or no Intelligence score at all.

The awakened creature is charmed by you for 30 days, or until you or your companions harm it. After that, it decides for itself whether to stay friendly, based on how you treated it. Verdict: situational. Awaken is a downtime and story spell, not a combat spell. It is worth it when your campaign has time, money, and a reason to want a thinking ally, a guide, or a talking guardian.
Worked example. A 9th-level druid has exactly one 5th-level spell slot per day. Casting Awaken uses that slot, a full 8 hours, and 1,000 gp. The Player's Handbook lists a skilled hireling at 2 gp per day, so the agate alone would pay one for 1,000 ÷ 2 = 500 days. What the gold buys instead is a permanent creature with its own stat block. A brown bear (Large, Intelligence 2) qualifies and keeps its 34 hit points, 40-foot speed, and bite-and-claws Multiattack, now with the mind of an average person. A giant eagle does not qualify, because its Intelligence is already 8.
For plants, the DM picks the statistics. The spell names the awakened shrub (Small, 10 hit points, CR 0) and the awakened tree (Huge, 59 hit points, CR 2, slam at +6 for 3d6 + 4) as examples.

When NOT to Use This
- •The party is on a deadline and cannot spare 8 hours.
- •You need the 1,000 gp for something urgent, such as Revivify diamonds.
- •You want a combat summon now; Conjure Animals or Conjure Elemental fits that job.
- •Your intended target has an Intelligence of 4 or higher, so the spell cannot affect it.
- •The party cannot be trusted to treat the creature well for 30 days.
Spell Slot Efficiency
| Metric | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Slot Efficiency | Situational. One 5th-level slot buys a permanent creature, but only once per casting and at 1,000 gp. |
| Action Economy | Poor in the moment, since the casting takes 8 hours. |
| Opportunity Cost | The slot is spent for the day, and the material cost is high at the level you get the spell. |
When worth the slot: Downtime, a safe base, spare gold, and a clear role for the new ally.
When NOT worth the slot: Dungeon days, time pressure, or tight finances.
Pro Tips
Tip #1: Check the target's Intelligence score before you buy the agate.
Why it works: Many likely picks fail the limit. Giant eagles and giant owls have Intelligence 8, giant elk 7, and worgs are monstrosities, not beasts.
This avoids the mistake of: Planning around a creature the spell cannot touch.
Tip #2: Treat the 30 days as an audition, not a guarantee.
Why it works: When the charm ends, the creature chooses whether to stay friendly based on how you treated it.
This avoids the mistake of: Assuming the creature will follow orders forever.
Tip #3: Pick a target for the role you need, not for raw size.
Why it works: A fast or swimming beast makes a better messenger or scout, while a large beast makes a better guard.
This avoids the mistake of: Awakening a creature that has no job in your campaign.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating the charmed creature as an obedient servant.
Why it's bad: The charmed condition stops it attacking you and gives you advantage on social checks with it. It does not force it to obey.
Do this instead: Ask, persuade, and give it reasons to help you.
Expecting Dispel Magic to undo the spell.
Why it's bad: Awaken has an instantaneous duration, so the Intelligence and speech are permanent and there is no ongoing spell to dispel.
Do this instead: Treat the new creature as a permanent part of the world.
Forgetting the harm clause covers your whole party.
Why it's bad: The charm ends if you or your companions do anything harmful to it, including a careless area spell.
Do this instead: Warn the party and keep the creature out of blast zones.
Usage Tips
- •Cast it during downtime in a safe place; 8 hours is longer than a short rest and as long as a long rest.
- •Give the creature a name, a role, and something it wants. The 30 days of charm are your chance to earn its loyalty.
- •Use a talking animal as a local guide, a spy that people ignore, or a messenger.
- •Ask your DM in advance what stat block an awakened plant will use.
Rules Notes
- •Target: a Huge or smaller beast or plant with an Intelligence of 3 or less, or no Intelligence score.
- •The target's Intelligence becomes 10, and it can speak one language you know. Its other statistics stay the same.
- •An awakened plant can move its limbs, roots, and vines and gains senses similar to a human's. The DM chooses its statistics.
- •It is charmed by you for 30 days or until you or your companions harm it. Afterward it chooses whether to remain friendly.
- •The duration is instantaneous, so the change is permanent.
Synergies
- •Speak with Animals or Speak with Plants helps you pick a willing target before you spend the gold.
- •Locate Animals or Plants helps you find a qualifying creature of the kind you want before you commit.
- •Bards can lean on their social skills to keep the creature friendly after the charm ends.
Anti-Patterns
- •Casting it on a creature you met an hour ago and expecting lifelong loyalty.
- •Spending your only 5th-level slot on Awaken right before a dangerous day.
- •Using the awakened creature as a disposable shield, which tends to end friendships.
Tactical Modules
- •Village Guardian — When to use: You want a permanent defender for a grove or settlement. Synergy: An awakened tree has 59 hit points and resists bludgeoning and piercing damage.
- •Talking Scout — When to use: You need eyes in the wilderness. Synergy: A beast with a swim or climb speed can report back in words instead of gestures.
- •Story Ally — When to use: The campaign rewards relationships and roleplay. Synergy: The creature can become a recurring NPC with its own goals.
Countermeasures
- •Threat: An enemy druid awakens a tree to guard a site — Response: Fire damage and ranged attacks keep you away from its slam. Fallback: Talk to it, since it may not share its creator's goals after the charm ends.
- •Threat: Your awakened ally turns against you — Response: Find out what changed and try to repair the relationship. Fallback: Part ways peacefully rather than fight a creature you created.
- •Threat: Interruptions during the 8-hour casting — Response: Cast it in a secure, guarded place. Fallback: Keep the agate safe until you can try again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Awaken good in 5e?
It is a situational spell. Awaken is strong for story and long-term allies but weak in a fight because it takes 8 hours and 1,000 gp. It shines in campaigns with downtime.
How does the Awaken spell work in 5e?
You spend 8 hours with a 1,000 gp agate and touch a Huge or smaller beast or plant with Intelligence 3 or less. It gains Intelligence 10, speech, and a 30-day charm.
Does Awaken work on trees in 5e?
Yes. A tree is a plant, and plants up to Huge size qualify. The DM chooses its stats, and the spell suggests the awakened tree, a CR 2 creature with 59 hit points.
Will an awakened beast stay loyal forever in 5e?
Not automatically. The charm lasts 30 days or until you or your companions harm it. Then the creature decides whether to stay friendly based on how you treated it.
Is Awaken worth preparing over Conjure Animals as a druid?
For combat, Conjure Animals is the better choice. Awaken is only worth preparing on a day when you plan to spend 8 hours and an agate on a permanent ally.
What is the difference between Awaken and Animal Friendship in 5e?
Animal Friendship is a 1st-level spell that charms a beast with Intelligence under 4 for 24 hours. Awaken permanently raises the creature's Intelligence to 10 and lets it speak.
What is the best beast to awaken in 5e?
It depends on the job. A brown bear makes a sturdy guard, a fast or swimming beast makes a good scout, and Huge beasts with Intelligence 3 or less, such as a mammoth, also qualify.
