Choosing local AI for your MacBook or desktop Mac
Look beyond the macOS badge: some apps require Apple Silicon, while others also support Intel Macs. Apple Silicon models use shared memory, so the size of your downloaded model and other open apps affect what will fit. Check the app's current macOS version and memory requirements before choosing a model.
A native desktop app may include its model runner, or it may connect to a separately running service such as Ollama. The same distinction applies to document chat and writing helpers. For image generation and long recordings, compare processing time as well as compatibility; being supported on a Mac does not guarantee a quick result on every MacBook.
