I’ll admit one of my blind spots here was familiarity bias. Initially, I wasn’t even planning to have onboarding since a lot of games in the genre, like RimWorld and Dwarf Fortress, more or less throw players in and let them figure things out. I ended up adding some guidance because I knew that wouldn’t work for everyone, but it’s clear it doesn’t go far enough yet.
I also really like your point about getting players to the main fantasy as quickly as possible. I’ll probably keep expanding the tutorial until players can recruit and send out their first adventurer, while making sure the supporting systems stay in a supporting role.
