Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager setup guide
Human Reply puts a live chat on your site and brings every conversation to your team's Telegram group. If your site runs Google Tag Manager, the chat goes in as one tag, without touching your site's code. This guide covers setting it up, adding the tag, using it and removing it.
1Before you start
- Telegram. A Telegram account on your phone, signed in where you'll create the bot: the Telegram app on your computer, Telegram Web, or the phone itself. And a group for your team with Topics turned on. You can make the group during setup.
- Tag Manager on your site. A web container that runs on every page of your site, and the Publish permission on it.
- A payment card, for the seven-day free trial. Nothing is charged during the trial.
- About ten minutes.
2Start setup
- Go to humanreply.app/start and choose Other.
- Type your site's address, the one your visitors use.
- Press Start setup. Setup opens in your browser, and everything in it is saved as you go.
3Set up, in five steps
- Create your bot. Press Open BotFather on the setup page. On a phone with the Telegram app it opens the chat with BotFather, with /newbot typed for you. On a computer it lands on Telegram's page for BotFather, whose Start Bot button opens the Telegram app if it is installed and does nothing if it isn't. Then follow the line under the button, "No Telegram on this computer?":
- Sign in to Telegram Web from the link on that line, with the Telegram app on your phone: scan the QR code on the screen (in the app, Settings › Devices), or enter your phone number and the code Telegram sends to the app or by SMS.
- Open the chat with @BotFather, Telegram's own bot for making bots. Its username is exactly @BotFather and its name carries Telegram's blue verified check. If the chat isn't open after you sign in, search for BotFather and open that one. If it shows a Start button, press it.
- Send /newbot. BotFather asks for a name, then for a username, which has to end in bot; if it's taken, try another. The setup page suggests both, each with a copy button.
- Copy the token from BotFather's reply, a line like 123456789:AAH…, and paste it into the token field on the setup page, under "Come back and paste the token it sends". It is checked at once, and setup moves on by itself. Or make the bot in the Telegram app on your phone: the same chat, token included, is in Telegram Web on your computer, so copy it from there.
- Add it to your group. Add the bot to your team's group as an admin, and turn on Topics. The page checks as you go.
- Send a test lead. Write a message on the setup page and answer it from your phone, to see the whole loop once.
- Set your hours. Business hours, auto-away, and the ways a visitor can ask for a reply when nobody is free.
- Make your account. Your email and the six-digit code we send to it, then the plan: seven days free, then $12 a month, or $120 a year. You add your card on Stripe; nothing is charged during the trial, and the plan starts by itself when the trial ends unless you cancel before then.

4Add the tag in Tag Manager
The last setup page shows a line for your site, and under it, Using Google Tag Manager? with a line made for Tag Manager. Use that one: Tag Manager rebuilds every script it adds and keeps only its address, so the line's address carries your site's key.

- In Tag Manager, open your site's container and go to Tags › New.
- Under Tag Configuration, choose Custom HTML and paste the line for Tag Manager. The copy button is beside it on the setup page.
- Under Triggering, choose All Pages. Name the tag Human Reply and press Save.
- Press Submit, then Publish.
- Open your site once. The setup page turns to "You're live."
<script src="https://humanreply.app/gtm/loader-1.js?site=rl_xxxxxxxx"></script>The line for Tag Manager. Yours carries your site's own key in place of rl_xxxxxxxx.
To check before you publish, press Preview in Tag Manager and open your site from there: the Human Reply tag is listed under Tags Fired, and the chat's launcher shows in the corner.
5Or use our tag template
Human Reply has a tag template of its own, with one field for your site's key instead of a line of code. It is open on GitHub.
- Download template.tpl from github.com/Human-Reply/gtm-template.
- In Tag Manager, go to Templates and press New under Tag Templates. Open the ⋮ menu, choose Import, pick the file and press Save.
- Go to Tags › New and choose Human Reply Live Chat under Custom.
- Paste your site's key: the part of the line after
site=, like rl_xxxxxxxx. - Choose All Pages under Triggering, Save, then Submit and Publish.
The template and the Custom HTML tag do the same thing. One of the two is enough.
6Make it yours
Sign in at humanreply.app and open your dashboard. Under Customize:
- Design: your logo and team name, the colour, light or dark, the font and size, the launcher's label.
- Position: bottom left or bottom right, the space from the edges, and the stack order if something on your site covers the bubble.
- Language: the bubble's language, your greetings, and any of its words.
- Behavior: the ways to reply you offer, and what visitors see about your team.
Changes are saved as you make them and reach your site at once. There is nothing to change in Tag Manager, and nothing to publish.

7Answer your visitors
- Every conversation opens as its own topic in your Telegram group, with a card that says who is writing: the page, where they came from, how many times they have visited, their language and device.
- Tap Claim, or just reply. Your answer shows on your site in seconds. Photos and files work both ways.
- React 👀 to a message to show the visitor it has been seen.
- Won or Lost closes the conversation and keeps it as a record.
- In the Desk topic, tap I'm available or I'm away. When nobody is free, the chat says so and asks the visitor where the reply should go.
- The dashboard shows today's chats, every transcript, and analytics: conversations, first-reply time and ratings, by page and by person.
8Your plan
Settings › Plan & billing shows when the trial ends and what comes next. Manage billing opens Stripe, where you can change the card, see invoices, switch between monthly and yearly, or cancel. If the plan ends, the chat leaves your site until you start it again; your settings, your team and your conversations are kept.
9Remove Human Reply
- In Tag Manager, go to Tags, tick the Human Reply tag, and choose Pause or Delete.
- Press Submit, then Publish. The chat leaves your site with that version.
Removing the tag doesn't end your plan: cancel it under Settings › Plan & billing. To delete your Human Reply account and its conversations, write to hello@send.humanreply.app.
10If something isn't working
- The setup page keeps listening. Check that you published the container, not only saved the tag. A browser that opened your site in the last few minutes can still run the previous version, so open your site in a private window.
- No chat, and the browser's console says the tag "needs data-site". The tag holds the ordinary line. Replace it with the line for Tag Manager, from under step 2 on the setup page.
- Your site asks visitors about cookies first. If your consent setup holds every tag back until a visitor agrees, it holds the chat back too. The tag's Advanced Settings › Consent Settings decide whether it waits.
- Settings › Connection says "Not on your site yet." The tag isn't published, or nobody has opened your site since. The row shows the line again, with a copy button.
- Open BotFather shows a Telegram page whose Start Bot button does nothing. There's no Telegram app on this computer. Follow the line under the button: sign in to Telegram Web with your phone, or make the bot in the Telegram app on your phone. Section 3, step 1 walks through both.
- Anything else: hello@send.humanreply.app. A person answers.
