Bug: Linux/Wayland: bitmap paste and image file drop do not work #398

Description

@AlexandrLatin

Description

On Linux under Wayland, VectorCraft does not insert an image from the clipboard or when I drag an image file onto the canvas.

The same clipboard image works in PhotoCraft. Pasting text into a text object in VectorCraft also works.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Copy an image to the clipboard.
  2. In VectorCraft, press Ctrl+V.
  3. Drag a PNG or JPEG file from the file manager onto the VectorCraft canvas.

Expected behavior

The clipboard image is inserted, and the dropped image file is placed on the canvas.

Actual behavior

VectorCraft reports that the clipboard is empty when I try to paste. Dragging an image file onto the canvas also does not insert it.

Environment

  • OS: Arch Linux
  • Desktop/compositor: Hyprland, Wayland. Dank Material Shell clipboard
  • VectorCraft: 0.4.0-1
  • PhotoCraft: 0.3.0-1
  • Clipboard MIME types observed: image/png, text/plain, text/uri-list, x-special/gnome-copied-files

PhotoCraft can insert the image from the same clipboard.

Thanks for the detailed report, @AlexandrLatin! The MIME types you listed pointed straight at the cause. #410 should fix the paste side:

    • Wayland clipboard: VectorCraft now reads the Wayland clipboard directly, through arboard's wayland-data-control. Before, it read the X11 clipboard through XWayland, which only holds what X11 apps copied.
    • Copied files: files copied in a file manager now paste as art (SVG, PDF, EMF/WMF or bitmaps), instead of as their path.

Dropping files on the window under Wayland needs a newer windowing library first (winit#1881, fixed for winit 0.31). Until then, copy and paste the file, use File › Place, or run with WAYLAND_DISPLAY= vectorcraft to use XWayland.

We could only check the Wayland part by compiling it. Could you try a build from main on Hyprland and reopen this issue if paste still fails? On GNOME (Mutter lacks the data-control protocol), image paste still falls back to X11. If you're not on our Discord yet, come say hi: https://discord.gg/artcraft
