Why

herdr machine add requires --label even though the SSH target usually already is the name you want to see in the sidebar. herdr machine add workbox --label workbox is redundant.

What

  • --label is optional for machine add. When omitted, the label is the SSH host with any user@ prefix removed (dev@workbox → workbox).
  • An explicit --label behaves exactly as before; machine rename still requires --label.
  • Updated the clap spec, usage strings, parser tests, and the docs/next English CLI reference and connecting-machines pages.

This is deliberately narrower than #4204, which also adds session discovery, an interactive label prompt, and Windows probe changes. This only removes the need to pass --label.

Testing

  • cargo test --bin herdr machine (43 passed), cargo test --bin herdr cli:: (103 passed), including a new add_parser_defaults_label_to_ssh_host test
  • cargo clippy --bin herdr --tests -- -D warnings clean
  • herdr machine add --help now shows Usage: herdr machine add [OPTIONS] <SSH_TARGET>

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

`herdr machine add <ssh-target>` no longer requires `--label`. Without
one, the machine is named after the SSH host with any `user@` prefix
removed, so `herdr machine add dev@workbox` shows up as `workbox`.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The machine add command no longer requires --label. If omitted, it derives the label from the SSH host and appends the session for non-default sessions. Derived labels are checked for length and uniqueness before catalog insertion and again after remote preparation. The help text, tests, and documentation reflect the optional label and its default.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c556f

No actionable issue remains with optional machine labels; the PR is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c556f

The SSH destination and its validation remain unchanged. A narrow concurrent-add case can nevertheless leave a prepared remote server running when the new default-name check declines to save the machine.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: If another add saves the same derived label during remote preparation, the new post-preparation check rejects persistence without undoing preparation. A server prepared on a different target can remain running without a saved machine entry to manage it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified failure mode is bounded to an add operation's catalog ownership and a server prepared on its SSH target. Evidence does not establish broader network exposure or a changed remote privilege boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The original SSH destination remains the remote-preparation input. An omitted label does not bypass target or session validation; catalog validation also applies to the saved profile.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The new collision rejection can leave remote state outside catalog ownership. The underlying lack of a transaction between remote preparation and persistence predates this change; the additional rejection path is the PR-specific difference.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider serializing or reserving derived-label additions, or defining recovery for a prepared server when persistence is declined. Any cleanup should distinguish a server started by this add from one already running.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium risk] Makes the machine label optional with a sensible default.

The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issue was established.

Summary

The PR makes --label optional for machine add, derives a default from the SSH host and optional session, and updates the CLI help and documentation. The follow-up changes address the previously noted default-label collisions, SSH URL host extraction, oversized labels, and non-executable example.

rounded_borders threading with upstream's per-client prefix-label
onboarding overlay, and the fork's command_palette test file is
updated for the new Vec<KeyCombo> prefix representation and the
BindingConfig::one constructor introduced by the multi-prefix-key
feature.
