Summary

Moves Herdr's libghostty-vt binding into its own workspace crate, crates/ghostty-vt (publish = false), so other crates can depend on the same binding by git instead of keeping a second copy. No behavior change for Herdr.

Moved as-is: src/ghostty/* (wrapper, generated bindings, native image source, tests), src/pane_graphics_files.rs, and the Linux-only src/platform/linux/native_image_sources.rs it uses. The vendored source stays at vendor/libghostty-vt.

Changes beyond the move:

  • Moved items are pub instead of pub(crate); herdr keeps its paths via use ghostty_vt as ghostty; and use ghostty_vt::pane_graphics_files;.
  • The crate owns TERM (xterm-256color); pane::PANE_TERM points at it.
  • viewport_link_regions returns a crate-local LinkRegion; herdr maps it to api::schema::PaneLinkRegion in one place.
  • The kitty file-upload test builds its escape sequence inline instead of calling herdr's encoder.
  • FileStore::source_directory is no longer cfg(test), because a herdr Linux test uses it and a dependency's cfg(test) is off.
  • Graphics cleanup warnings keep the herdr::pane_graphics_files log target so the default herdr=info filter still shows them.
  • The zig build moved to crates/ghostty-vt/build.rs and installs with --prefix under the build's OUT_DIR instead of the shared vendor/libghostty-vt/zig-out, so concurrent builds for different targets can't link each other's archive. On Apple targets only the static archive is linked from a separate directory with static=ghostty-vt: the old rustc-link-arg doesn't propagate from a dependency, and -l next to the dylib would pick the dylib. The binary is still statically linked. Also extends the zig target map.
  • Root [workspace] with default-members so plain cargo nextest and cargo clippy cover both packages.
  • Tooling: bindings generator output path, nix fileset and path filters, CI incremental cache key, and the scalar ReleaseSafe CI step now uses package(ghostty-vt) | test(ghostty), a superset of what test-one ghostty matched before the move.

Testing

  • macOS: just ci (3624 passed); otool -L shows no ghostty dylib; Linux cargo clippy --all-targets cross-checked from macOS.
  • Linux (Fedora): just check including windows-lint and maintenance tests; the nextest test set matches master.
  • ReleaseSafe/scalar filter run locally: 108/108.
  • Homebrew-style cargo install --locked --path . from a git archive tarball on macOS and Linux, plus the formula's server/workspace smoke test.
  • Nix in a nixos/nix container: nix flake check (builds herdr) and nix flake check --all-systems --no-build.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The repository adds ghostty-vt as a Cargo workspace crate and moves the vendored Zig build and native linking configuration into its build script. The crate exposes terminal and pane-graphics APIs. The application imports those APIs and adapts link-region values to its pane API. CI, Nix packaging, bindgen output, and editor configuration are updated for the new crate.

Suggested reviewers: jjliebig

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to cc5a3

The previously reported native-build collision has been addressed, and the updated scalar test check selects the intended tests. The PR is mergeable after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cc5a3

The current application retains its link-response boundary and graphics-file protections. The main remaining risk is how future clients use the newly public APIs; no introduced security failure was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly public library APIs increase potential reach for code in future dependent clients, not established remote reach through the current pane API. Observed graphics-file exposure remains within a client's process and its private filesystem hierarchy.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Terminal-controlled link text and URIs are available to library callers, but the current pane-link region response contains coordinates rather than those values. Graphics-file reads recheck path identity, metadata, and length.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Each decoded export is capped at 16 MiB, but aggregate outstanding-export limits remain the caller's responsibility; the package extraction does not itself add a shared aggregate limit for future callers.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before another client accepts untrusted graphics data, assign responsibility for aggregate export budgets, export lifetime, and terminal-link URI handling at that client's integration boundary.

[High risk] Reorganizes terminal binding code into a separate workspace crate.

The PR appears safe to merge based on the changes reviewed.

Summary

The PR extracts the vendored terminal binding into a workspace crate and updates Herdr’s imports, native build, packaging, and CI paths. Since the previous review, it also isolates Zig output per build, changes CI caching, and retries transient API listener accept errors.

Also fixes two merge seam breaks: overlays.rs combines the fork's
rounded_borders threading with upstream's per-client prefix-label
onboarding overlay, and the fork's command_palette test file is
updated for the new Vec<KeyCombo> prefix representation and the
BindingConfig::one constructor introduced by the multi-prefix-key
feature.

herdr 0.9.2 moved the libghostty-vt zig build out of the top-level
build.rs into crates/ghostty-vt/build.rs (herdrdev/herdr#4661), so the
postPatch substitution failed with "pattern .arg("build") doesn't match
anything in file 'build.rs'". Patch the new location.
