Summary

Refreshes this integration onto current master (3f2a6e74) and resolves the registry conflicts requested in review.

  • Recognize Jcode and support herdr agent start --kind jcode, agent prompt --wait, native session identity, and jcode --resume <id> restoration.
  • Install the session hook as a native Jcode hook-array entry, preserving existing string/array hooks and unrelated TOML. Respect JCODE_HOME and reject malformed configuration before writing assets.
  • Keep generation-1 endpoint enums, schemas, method-shape fixtures, and codecs unchanged. Jcode follows the existing experimental CLI-only integration route: herdr integration install jcode, uninstall jcode, and status. It is intentionally absent from the frozen Settings/API integration list.
  • Provide Unix and native PowerShell adapters. Jcode-specific Windows quoting preserves backslashes, spaces, and apostrophes through Jcode's command parser.
  • Preserve lifecycle source/sequence checks. A real-client test exposed early --resume reporting before process detection. The replacement now waits for verified process acquisition and is invalidated by newer reports, exit/respawn, or ownership changes.
  • Retain the 18-transition lifecycle contract graph and shared shell-hook conformance checks, including source assertions and bounded collector I/O. Deterministic fake-client lifecycle checks now use a synthetic manifest, following current detection-test policy. Real screen compatibility was checked with actual Jcode clients.

Approved scope: #1848 (reply in thread). Earlier screen evidence: #2018.

Thanks to @przeqpiciel for the conflict-resolution and rebase work incorporated/adapted here.

Jcode dependency

1jehuang/jcode#758 is merged. The native composable-hook support is available from Jcode 0.68.0. Live checks below used Jcode 0.84.58-dev and the currently installed 0.84.62-dev.

Validation on the refreshed branch

  • just ci: 3,649 Rust tests passed, 6 skipped, with formatting, Clippy, maintenance, architecture, and integration-asset checks passing.
  • just docs-contract-test: 7 passed.
  • Agent detection manifest/config-reference validators and git diff --check passed.
  • Real Herdr CLI install/reinstall/status/uninstall checks preserved user string/array hooks and custom JCODE_HOME; invalid config failed without mutation.
  • Real Jcode server started outside Herdr, with two actual Jcode clients connected through one isolated socket. Each pane acquired its own native ID and completed agent prompt --wait without cross-pane identity changes.
  • Real /clear changed only the originating pane's ID. Native --resume restored the original ID and transcript. Stopping/restarting Herdr automatically restored three saved conversations with their names, native IDs, and live Jcode client titles.
  • Prompt workflow checks used a local streaming model fixture, not a hosted provider. Herdr/Jcode processes, PTYs, hooks, sockets, persistence, and public CLI commands were real. All task-owned processes were cleaned up.

Hosted validation on 68c3a4f7

All current-head checks pass: Linux, macOS, Windows, Windows ConPTY packaging, Nix, distribution contracts and conventional commits. CI run.

Both CodeRabbit and Greptile completed review of this commit. Greptile reports 5/5 with no outstanding finding. CodeRabbit's valid malformed-config, private-file-permission and source-scoped resume findings are fixed and regression-tested. Its additional Windows module-gating comment is already covered by the enclosing tests/cli.rs crate-level Unix guard, with the explanation and passing native Windows job linked inline.

Native Windows tests now pass, including the PowerShell adapter tests. Full actual Jcode TUI acceptance was performed on Linux only. Local Windows cross-check was previously blocked by the absent SDK; hosted native Windows CI supplied the platform test evidence without local SDK license acceptance.

Boundaries

  • A newly cleared empty Jcode session has no durable transcript until a prompt saves it and cannot be cold-restored by native --resume before then. Saved conversations were verified across restart.
  • The new detection manifest remains bundled with an exact unpublished-catalog exception because current stable clients cannot identify the new agent. Release maintainers must publish it and remove the exception before the first stable release containing Jcode.
  • No release files, published documentation, frozen endpoint expectations, or unrelated branches are included.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds Jcode as a detected agent and experimental integration. It adds Unix and PowerShell session hooks, TOML configuration management, CLI install and uninstall commands, status validation, native session identity reporting, and jcode --resume support. Terminal state now defers early Jcode session replacement until process acquisition. Tests cover hook contracts, lifecycle transitions, configuration preservation, resume behavior, and multi-pane session identity. Documentation and localized references describe installation and restore behavior.

The PR appears safe to merge; the refreshed changes address the reviewed configuration, permission, and resume-invalidation concerns without leaving an outstanding finding.

Summary

Adds experimental CLI-only Jcode integration support, including detection, native session identity and resume, cross-platform hook installation, configuration preservation, documentation, and lifecycle coverage.

  • Registers Jcode process and screen-manifest detection.
  • Installs composable Unix and PowerShell session hooks while preserving user configuration.
  • Adds native jcode --resume <id> restoration with guarded startup-race handling.
  • Adds multilingual documentation and extensive integration and lifecycle tests.
  • The changes since the previous review correctly reject malformed hook tables before mutation, retain private interpreter-only Unix assets, and scope pending-resume invalidation to Jcode reports.

Extend Jcode coverage to the negative and adversarial cases.

Add Jcode to planner_rejects_path_refs_for_id_only_agents and ids_are_data_not_shell_text. The current test covers only the happy-path argument vector.

Consider rejecting a non-string session_start value.

jcode_session_start_command returns Ok(None) when hooks.session_start exists but is not a string. install_jcode then treats the slot as empty, skips the backup, and overwrites the value. The parse path and the table path both return descriptive errors, so an explicit error here would keep the behavior consistent and prevent silent loss of a user value.

461-466: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Add a short comment for the Jcode downgrade rule.

The Grok branch above explains why a valid hook file with a broken config counts as outdated. The Jcode branch repeats the pattern without that context. One comment line, or a combined condition for both targets, keeps the rule clear.

Use an explicit empty CDPATH assignment.

CDPATH= cd is intentional, but ShellCheck reports SC1007. Use CDPATH='' cd ... to make the assignment explicit.

4149-4174: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Consider bounding the socket accept/join and the output-polling window.

Two robustness concerns in this new end-to-end test:

  • The polling loop waits at most 1 second (100 × 10ms) for previous_output to appear before asserting its contents. Under a loaded CI runner, this window can be too short, causing an intermittent, hard-to-diagnose failure rather than a clear one.
  • The spawned server thread calls listener.accept() with no timeout, and server.join() later waits on it unconditionally. If the hook script fails to connect to the socket for any reason (a regression in the hook, environment issue, etc.), this test hangs indefinitely instead of failing with a clear timeout error.

Consider widening the polling budget and adding a bounded wait around the accept()/join() (for example, a channel-based recv_timeout guard) so a broken hook produces a clear test failure instead of a stalled CI job.

hey jeremy, thanks for the pr. the detection part looks good, but the session restore hook has a problem.

jcode runs hooks from its shared server, so they use the server’s original herdr pane id. the first pane may work, but later panes can report their session to the wrong pane. if the server started outside herdr, they report nothing. the current test does not cover this.

existing hooks are also run differently after installation: jcode normally runs them directly, but this adapter uses sh -c, which can change their behavior.

could we fix these in jcode first and test two panes using the same server? native support for multiple hooks would make the herdr integration much safer.

Also assert params["source"] in the shared contract table.

The header comment describes this table as the check for "Herdr's stable session-report contract". assert_report in tests/cli/jcode_lifecycle.rs (lines 690) asserts params["source"] == "herdr:jcode", but this table does not check source at all. A regression that drops or renames the source field in one adapter would pass here.

Add a source field to Case and assert it per agent.

Jcode-side dependency update: jcode #758 was independently verified today (fresh clone, macOS aarch64, cargo 1.96.0). The full test matrix on the crates it touches shows no PR-introduced failures — the two client_lifecycle tests and the three terminal-launch tests flagged in review all fail identically on the base commit (v0.67.0), so they are pre-existing upstream issues, not regressions. The PR is merge-ready from a test standpoint. Evidence is on jcode #758.

Done on our side. The jcode-side dependency (1jehuang/jcode #758) is independently verified merge-ready — no PR-introduced failures, all flagged failures pre-existing on base. This PR is green and maintainer-approved. Ready to ship the jcode integration whenever both land.

Rebased onto current master and verified (as of 2026-08-12, 88 commits ahead of the branch point).

Since this branch can't be force-pushed by others, I rebased it and pushed the result to przeqpiciel/herdr@feat/jcode-integration-rebased (same 9 commits, original authorship). @1jehuang you can pull it into this PR with git pull --rebase git@github.com:przeqpiciel/herdr.git feat/jcode-integration-rebased (or cherry-pick 95d35a17..46074105).

Conflict resolutions vs. master:

  • src/integration/registry.rs — kept both the new opencode TUI validity check and the jcode hook-config check in integration_status_at.
  • src/integration/targets.rs — import list merged; opencode TUI constants retained, stale JCODE_PREVIOUS_HOOK_INSTALL_NAME dropped (later commits removed it anyway).
  • docs/…/integrations.mdx — kept master's Hermes integration version 5 and added Jcode version 1.

Verification (Rust 1.96.1, zig 0.15.2):

  • cargo check --all-targets --locked — clean
  • cargo fmt --check — clean
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings — clean
  • jcode unit tests (6) + jcode_lifecycle_state_space_graph CLI test — pass
  • full --bin herdr + --test cli suites: only the pre-existing flakes (generated_workspace_ids_are_short_base32_handles, plugin path race, and 4 container-PTY process-lifecycle tests) which fail identically on clean master

Status update on getting this merged — the conflict resolution is done and validated, but delivery is blocked on push access.

What happened

  • I resolved the current master merge conflicts locally (preserving both the Jcode integration and the upstream Qwen/OpenCode integration changes across CLI parsing, detection, integration registries/actions/targets, config docs, and integration docs, and updating the merged fixed-size target/agent registries for the combined entries).
  • Validation: cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings pass; the focused merged Jcode/Qwen/OpenCode integration path passes 152 tests; and the built binary was exercised via the public CLI (herdr integration status/install/uninstall jcode) against an isolated real Jcode config (PASS). Full-suite acceptance remains blocked only by pre-existing flaky live-handoff tests, unrelated to this change.
  • The resolver (account copydataai) could not push the resolved commit to 1jehuang/feat/jcode-integration because that account has read-only access to the fork.
  • I re-submitted the resolved branch as PR feat: add jcode integration (was #2248, rebased and conflicts resolved) #2809 from przeqpiciel/herdr, but the herdr:pr-gate bot auto-closed it because przeqpiciel is not in .github/APPROVED_CONTRIBUTORS.

The ready-to-push branch
The fully resolved, single-commit branch is available at:
przeqpiciel/herdr branch feat/jcode-integration (commit c4674106, based on current master d76657f2).

Since the head of this PR is on 1jehuang/herdr and 1jehuang is an approved contributor, the cleanest unblock is for the branch owner to pull/merge that resolved branch into 1jehuang:feat/jcode-integration (or for a maintainer to add przeqpiciel to .github/APPROVED_CONTRIBUTORS / reopen #2809). Let me know which path you'd prefer and I'll do the legwork.

@ogulcancelik @1jehuang — the rebase/resolution is already done and validated: the fully resolved single-commit branch is at przeqpiciel/herdr:feat/jcode-integration (commit c4674106, based on current master d76657f2). markmaier pushed a commit to markmaier/herdr that referenced this pull request Sep 10, 2026
Adds full Jcode integration matching upstream Herdr PR herdrdev#2248: refined
screen-detection manifest with composer/status-line evidence, install/
uninstall of a native session_start hook (preserving existing user
hooks, including hook arrays), a shell adapter that reports pane-local
session identity over the Herdr socket, native session resume via
jcode --resume <id>, the public integration CLI/API target, and docs.
Also updates the jcode agent lookup to accept the j-code alias.

+1 on wanting this merged — we're actively affected by the gap this closes.

Confirmed today on herdr 0.9.1: herdr agent prompt can't target a jcode
pane at all. agent list shows the pane recognized (agent: "jcode",
correct agent_status), but there's no agent_session block the way a
claude/codex/etc. pane gets, and agent start --kind jcode still errors
unknown option: jcode. Root-caused it as a server-side detection gap (not
something fixable from our end via report-agent-session, which is
silently a no-op for an unrecognized agent kind) — this PR is exactly the
fix. Our current workaround is pane run/pane send-text + polling
agent list, which works but loses the readiness/retry semantics
agent prompt gives native agent kinds.

@1jehuang — is there anything blocking the rebase @ogulcancelik asked for
on 2026-09-04? przeqpiciel's comment above says the conflict resolution
against current master is already done and validated (przeqpiciel/herdr
branch feat/jcode-integration, commit c4674106) but they can't push it
into this PR themselves (no write access to your fork, and their own
re-submission as #2809 got auto-closed by the pr-gate bot for not being an
approved contributor). If it'd help, happy to independently verify the
resolved branch against our own jcode setup once it's up — just say the
word.

Rebased onto current master (as of 2026-09-17, previously 225 commits behind).

Resolved branch: przeqpiciel/herdr:feat/jcode-integration (commit f12d2d8f), same 2 commits, original authorship.

Conflict resolution vs. master (25 files): merged the Jcode integration with the Qwen/OpenCode/Letta/Muse integrations landed since the last rebase, across src/detect/mod.rs (Agent enum/ALL/SCREEN_MANIFEST_AGENTS), src/integration/{actions,targets,mod,tests}.rs, src/cli/integration.rs, src/config/{model,sidebar,sound}.rs, src/agent_resume.rs, tests/cli/hooks.rs (adopted master's refactored FakeHookSocket helper), and docs/schema/config-reference files.

Also fixed two things the rebase surfaced:

  • tests/fixtures/endpoint-method-shapes-v1.json: updated the integration.install shape digest for the new Jcode enum variant.
  • distribution/agent-detection/jcode.toml: was still pinned to the original 2026-08-03 manifest; synced it to the bundled 2026-08-18 swarm-detection version so scripts/agent_detection_manifest_check.py passes again.

Verification (Rust via zig 0.16.0 cc, since the vendored libghostty-vt now requires it):

  • cargo fmt --check — clean
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings — clean
  • cargo test --bin herdr jcode (7 tests) and cargo test --test cli jcode (2 tests, including the 18-transition lifecycle state-space graph) — pass
  • cargo test --test cli shell_hooks_conform_to_session_report_contract — pass
  • python3 scripts/agent_detection_manifest_check.py — pass
  • python3 -m unittest scripts.test_agent_detection_manifest_check scripts.test_config_reference_check — pass

Confirmed two pre-existing flaky container-PTY tests (client_shell_attach_seeds_workspace, client_shell_config_diagnostics_follow_keybinding_ownership) fail identically on a clean origin/master checkout in this environment, unrelated to this branch.

@1jehuang — feel free to pull przeqpiciel/herdr:feat/jcode-integration into 1jehuang:feat/jcode-integration to update this PR.

Updated the PR branch to d5667dd on current master 3f2a6e7. Thanks @przeqpiciel for the rebase/conflict-resolution work. This update keeps the frozen endpoint contracts unchanged and uses the existing experimental CLI integration route.

Local just ci passes all 3,646 native tests (6 skipped), and real Jcode 0.84.62-dev checks pass for two-pane start/prompt routing, native resume, and automatic restoration after Herdr restart. Full details and limitations are in the updated description. I am monitoring the new cross-platform CI and bot reviews.

@ogulcancelik, the requested rebase is now published for re-review. Jcode #758 is merged, so the needs-upstream-fix label appears stale. @rameshbaskaran, the updated branch is available if you would still like to independently verify it.

Port the original integration and reviewed contributor conflict resolution onto current master. Preserve the frozen client endpoint using the existing experimental CLI integration route, add native Windows hooks, and validate session replacement and multi-pane prompt routing.

Defer early native resume identity replacement until verified process acquisition without weakening lifecycle authority or reordering reports.

Based on PR herdrdev#2248 and przeqpiciel's conflict-resolution work.

@coderabbitai review

Please review the current head fcd92f4. The follow-up adds Japanese/Chinese documentation parity and clarifies the saved-transcript requirement. Local full CI passes (3646 tests, 6 skipped), and the hosted distribution contract now passes. The existing timeout/source-assertion thread is resolved. @greptile-apps please also refresh the review of the current head, as the visible summary still references the August commit.

Learning: For the Jcode integration in `src/integration/assets/jcode/herdr-agent-state.sh`, `herdr-session-start.previous` resides in the user-owned Jcode hooks directory under the existing `~/.jcode` trust boundary. The integration must force this saved observer file to mode `0600`; the install test verifies that mode. Additional parent-directory ownership and writability checks are not required because an actor that can replace entries in that directory can already replace the managed hook, and the observer command exists in the user's `config.toml` before installation.

@greptile-apps please refresh the review on 68c3a4f. This addresses all three new review findings: reject malformed top-level hooks before uninstall mutation, keep Unix hook permissions at 0600 with interpreter-based invocation, and scope pending Jcode resume invalidation to Jcode reports. Added regressions pass with the full suite (3649 tests, 6 skipped). Real CLI malformed-config/mode checks and actual Jcode multi-pane, clear, native resume, and persisted cold restore passed again. Replies with details are on each review thread.

Ready for maintainer re-review at 68c3a4f. All final-head checks pass: Linux (3649 tests), macOS (3435), Windows (3153), Nix, ConPTY packaging and distribution/docs. Both review bots completed on this head. The three valid CodeRabbit findings are fixed and tested; the remaining module-gating comment is already covered by the enclosing test-crate cfg, explained inline with the green Windows job.

Actual installed Jcode was also rechecked through two-pane start/prompt, isolated /clear, native --resume and Herdr restart restoring three saved conversations. The PR description includes validation scope and the empty-unsaved-session limitation.

@ogulcancelik the requested master refresh is complete and GitHub reports no merge conflicts. Please re-review when convenient. Jcode #758 is already merged, so the old needs-upstream-fix label appears stale. @rameshbaskaran the current PR head is ready for the independent setup verification you offered. Thanks again @przeqpiciel for the conflict-resolution work.
