docs: fixes several typos and updates a try except block

Fixes several typos and a try/except block that impacts internal google3 tests.

The needed fixes were identified during an import of this codebase to google3.

We are in the process of removing the Kokoro check because we implemented a number of GitHub Actions that replace everything that the Kokoro check used to do. We are in the process of deleting the correct config on google3. When that happens, the change will be propagated to this repo.

Until then, the Required label on the Kokoro check has been removed and the Kokoro check can be ignored.
