$\textcolor{cyan}{\texttt{ {BRGV-OS}}}$

BRGV-OS is a custom Void Linux based distribution that aims to facilitate developers, researchers and users to transitioning from Windows® or macOS® to Linux® by maintaining familiar operational habits and workflows.
This work was do it for our job needs at Gene Bank research institute from Suceava, Romania, but anyone can use or modify for their needs.
The name BRGV is an acronym from Romanian "Banca de Resurse Genetice Vegetale" (shortly in English Gene Bank), and OS mean, of course, Operating System.

Theme Light Theme Dark
BRGV-OS Fluent Light BRGV-OS Fluent Dark
BRGV-OS 1 BRGV-OS 2

BRGV-OS have now 12 themes, 2 for users what prefers classical style and 10 for the users what prefers Unix® style. Watch the video below to see how easy it is to switch themes:

For theme management I wrote the following extensions, scripts and menus:

  • Accent gtk theme, it is a Gnome™ extension that changes the gtk app theme, based on the accent color chosen by the user in Gnome Settings, Appearance screen and by preferred color schema, Light or Dark, source code here;
  • Accent icons theme, it is a Gnome™ extension that changes the icons themes, based on the accent color chosen by the user in Gnome Settings (gnome-control-center), Appearance screen and by preferred color schema, Light or Dark, source code here;
  • Accent user theme, it is a Gnome™ extension that changes the user's theme based on the accent color chosen by the user in Gnome Settings, Appearance screen and by preferred color schema, Light or Dark, source code here;
  • Light/Dark cursor theme, it is a Gnome™ extension that changes the cursor themes, based on the preferred color schema, Light or Dark, source code here;
  • And 12 scripts, these are called by 12 menus.

Also BRGV-OS have another extension Set Notification Banner Position, it is a Gnome™ extension that changes the position of the banner notification on the sreen, source code here.

$\textcolor{teal}{\texttt{How to build}}$

It is recommended to use Void Linux or any other distribution based on it. BRGV-OS works perfectly as well!

Localization

By default, the pipeline builds the ISO for the Romanian language. If you want to build the ISO for International English (USA), please make the following changes:

  • Edit the locale file and change ro_RO.UTF-8 to en_US.UTF-8.
  • Edit the keymap file and change ro to us.

If you wish to add support for your own native language, take a look at build_brgvos.sh to see how Romanian and English USA profiles are implemented.

Building a Generic ISO Image

To build a generic ISO image, you must use a host system running Void Linux or BRGV-OS (which is a customized spin of Void Linux). Open a terminal and run the following commands:

git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com
cd brgvos-void
sudo ./build_brgvos.sh

Building a Custom ISO for Slimbook EVO

Since I use a Slimbook EVO laptop, the script includes a specialized hardware profile. To build a highly optimized, custom ISO tailored specifically for this machine (including local NPU and AMD ROCm acceleration), run:

sudo ./build_brgvos.sh evo

Once the compilation process successfully finishes, you will find the generated bootable ISO image inside the iso_build directory.

Feel free to explore the codebase, inspect the custom configurations, and tweak the build scripts to create your own personalized spin!

Important

In this moment the build is for ro_RO (Romanian language) and en_US (English USA language) , but with few modifications can be buildid for anothers.
Exist ISO images files for Generic machine: ro_RO.UTF-8 and en_US.UTF-8.
ISO files can be downloaded from:
here Download BRGV-OS iso ro_RO version for ro_RO versions
or
here Download BRGV-OS iso en_US version for en_US version
and
SHA256 files can be downloaded from:
here Download BRGV-OS sha256 ro_RO version for ro_RO versions
or
here Download BRGV-OS sha256 en_US version for en_US version

Also, exist ISO image for Slimbook EVO laptop:
ISO file can be downloaded from:
here Download BRGV-OS iso en_US version for en_US version and
SHA256 files can be downloaded from:
here Download BRGV-OS sha256 en_US version for en_US version

⚠️ Boot Time Warning: Since the ISO image footprint has grown to over 3.8GB and includes a vast number of files, the system needs more time to unpack and boot into memory. Please be patient during the first startup.

Note

-> News <-

The installer has reached version 0.32 and in nexts videos you can see what are news:

BRGV-OS install on UEFI machine
English
BRGV-OS install on BIOS machine
Romanian

Video with the older installer version 0.31 remain for a while.

Since the installer is a separate project, I decided to start a new repository at https://github.com/florintanasa/brgvos-installer where you can find more information about it and the installation modes.

Tip

$\textcolor{cyan}{\texttt{\textcolor{red}{\textit{Live Medium}} have 2 users \textcolor{red}{\textit{root}} and \textcolor{red}{\textit{brgvos}} with the same password \textcolor{red}{\textit{voidlinux}}}}$

Note

Is not in plan to create an ISO for each language, because, in my opinion, it is a waste of energy, human and physical (bandwidth consumption, electricity, etc.), to manage a multitude of iso images.
The next approach will be to use scripts for each language and which:

  • will add support for the respective language to the system;
  • will modify the menu with the appropriate translation;
  • will add the corresponding keyboard;
  • will apply the changes to the entire system;
  • will apply the changes to the user only;
  • will apply the changes to the entire system and the user.

Will ensure the transition from one language to another through English.

If you wish to contribuite look at next scripts set_xx_XX.UTF-8_gnome.sh from link and
In the following link is a video demonstration how can be used these scripts.
