Spotlight your business here
Put your training business in front of dog owners looking for their next step.
Compare programs that combine a stay with the business and training sessions. Choose your location to find a trainer near you.
Board and train programs combine a residential stay with dog training. Your dog stays with the business while a trainer works on agreed goals. Those goals might include basic obedience, leash manners or settling, but the actual curriculum varies. Start by asking what the program is designed to teach and whether it fits your dog’s age, experience and behavior. A program name or the number of days alone cannot answer that question.
Before choosing board and train, compare the training sessions and the care provided around them. Ask where your dog sleeps, who supervises the dogs, how rest and exercise are arranged and what happens outside staffed hours. Find out who will actually train your dog and how much individual attention is scheduled. Photos may help you follow the stay, but ask whether updates also explain what your dog is practicing and where they need more work.
Ask to understand the full residential arrangement before handing over your dog. A trainer’s home, a boarding kennel and a dedicated training center have different routines. Clarify how dogs are separated, whether group play occurs, who notices changes in appetite or comfort and who can authorize veterinary care. Tell the provider about escape behavior, handling difficulties, feeding needs and any history of conflict with dogs.
Discuss the training approach in concrete terms. Which rewards, equipment and handling techniques would the trainer use for your dog? What happens when a dog is confused, worried or unable to perform an exercise? Ask for an example relevant to your goals rather than relying only on a label such as obedience training or canine behavior training. Explain your own preferences before making a commitment.
If your concerns include aggression, reactivity or difficulty being left alone, describe those situations before booking. Ask whether an assessment is required and what experience the trainer has with similar cases. A residential program is not automatically the right setting for every behavior concern. Compare it with private lessons, in-home coaching or day training, where your dog returns home after the day’s activities.
Ask how the trainer will establish a starting point and document improvement. Walking quietly in a familiar training yard is a different achievement from walking past dogs on your normal route. Progress reports should identify the setting, distractions and help the dog still needs. A short edited video cannot establish that a behavior is reliable in every situation.
Owner involvement is an essential part of comparing these programs. Find out how the trainer will teach you to use the new skills, not simply demonstrate them at pickup. Ask whether other household members can attend handover lessons and whether you will practice with feedback. Discuss how the exercises transfer to your own walks, visitors and home routines, where distractions may differ from the training facility.
Finally, compare the plan for returning home. Ask what written instructions, follow-up sessions or messaging support are available and how you should report a problem. Clarify how progress is described and what you will need to reinforce through ongoing practice. Use the business profiles above to make a shortlist, then contact each provider with the same questions so you can compare the actual program, care and support.
Plan the first days home with the provider. Your dog will meet familiar people, smells and routines that may bring back old habits. Keep the first exercises achievable and reward the responses you want to maintain. If a skill breaks down, use the agreed easier version and contact the trainer. Avoid repeatedly testing the hardest situation simply because the residential stay has ended.
There is no standard duration that suits every dog or goal. Ask what a proposed stay is intended to accomplish, how the provider will decide whether it is appropriate and what happens if progress is slower than expected. A longer stay is not automatically better. The written agreement should describe services, care, review points, handover and any limits to follow-up support.
Private lessons keep owner practice central. In-home training addresses the household environment directly, while day training gives the professional practice time and lets the dog return home each day. Compare these alternatives when boarding itself may be stressful or the main challenge depends on a particular person or location. The best format is the one that fits the dog’s needs and includes a realistic plan for the people who live with them.
The main potential advantage is structured practice with a professional dog trainer, alongside a consistent daily routine. The tradeoff is that much of the learning happens away from you and the home environment. A dog may become fluent with the trainer’s cues while still needing help responding to your timing, your front door and your walking route. Compare that transfer challenge with the time and support you can provide after the stay.
Dog owners should distinguish socialization from simply being around other dogs. A program may provide carefully managed exposure, but shared housing or play does not automatically improve confidence. Ask how your dog’s behavior is monitored during the whole stay, including resting and transitions between activities. For a reactive dog, appropriate separation may be more useful than mandatory group interaction.
A two-week board and train package describes duration, not a standard level of achievement. Shorter programs may target a narrow skill, while a longer program can still leave behavioral issues unresolved if the setting does not reproduce the relevant context. Before choosing any training option, agree what the dog has learned at the end of the program will mean in observable terms and how you will continue training at home.
Ask whether equipment such as an e-collar is proposed or included before booking, and discuss your preferences explicitly. A program should explain its methods without requiring you to accept an unfamiliar tool at pickup. Clear communication also means identifying what is optional, what requires your agreement and when you will be contacted if the original plan changes.

More detail to help you choose and prepare.
They can be useful when the dog is comfortable with the care arrangement, goals are appropriate and the owner receives practical transfer lessons. Their value is limited if the only evidence is a trainer demonstration and there is little help using the skills at home. Compare the complete service, including follow-up, before choosing.
A residential stay cannot guarantee resolution of either concern. These situations need assessment and an individual plan, and the relevant triggers may exist mainly in the dog’s own home. Discuss the history before booking and ask why residential training is appropriate compared with supported work in the usual environment.
Suitability depends on the puppy, care environment, health requirements and what the stay will teach. Ask how rest, toileting, gentle handling and appropriate experiences are managed, and how you will learn the routines. A puppy’s education continues after returning home.
