    Learned borrowing from Latin āthlēticus, borrowed from Ancient Greek ᾱ̓θλητῐκός (āthlētĭkós), from ἀθλητής (athlētḗs) + -ικός (-ikós). By surface analysis, athlète +‎ -ique.
