From Proto-Finno-Permic *pisa-~*piśa- (to rain). Related to Erzya пиземе (pizeme, rain), Finnish pisara (drop).

Usage notes

According to Paasonen, the Mordvinic languages have a verb пиземс (pizems, to rain), calquing Russian where rain and snow is said "to go" is, however, very common, the verbs молемс (molems) and тумс (tums) are used for this purpose.
