Alpha Centauri

[edit]

Per your post at WT:VG, I found some references to improve the article. I posted them on Talk:Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri at the very top of the page.

Also, myself and other editors have created a writing guide for video game articles. I believe it can give you more insight into writing a quality video game article on Wikipedia. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. (Guyinblack25 talk 14:46, 4 June 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Since the guide is in my userspace, no one else can delete it with out good reason. I have no intention to delete it either, though it may get moved one day into the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games space. It should't be hard to find either way.
I'll try to get to Alien Crossfire's talk page sometime over the weekend or next week. As you may have noticed, I'm semi-retired. What that amounts to is that I do things very slowly. :-\
Glad to see the articles getting some attention. Let me know if you have any other questions. (Guyinblack25 talk 17:31, 4 June 2010 (UTC))[reply]
Welcome. (Guyinblack25 talk 04:19, 7 June 2010 (UTC))[reply]
I just added the only useful thing mentioned about Alpha Centauri in the Nov. 2000 PC Gamer — they reviewed the game in their April 1999 issue. — Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 12:13, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like I missed the merge discussion over the weekend. :-\
Overall, the article looks to be making progress. If you'd like to look at similar game articles that are rated high-quality on Wikipedia, I recommend Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, Halo Wars, Populous: The Beginning, and StarCraft as examples to use as templates. Happy editing. (Guyinblack25 talk 19:27, 14 June 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Alpha Centauri / Alien Crossfire

[edit]

Ooh, it was a little while ago that I edited Alien Crossfire (and possibly Alpha Cent. as well). I did mainly grammar and touchup changes, but I'd be glad to look over what you write and help polish it once you've revised the articles.Peyre (talk) 18:08, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You asked me what I wrote about SMAC. It was about base size being a signed char (or signed octet) which made it possible to overflow from base size from 127 to -128. You can reproduce this by assigning food sources and building the orbital food sources for a base. I found this with the patch that had the jungle installed. If you build a base in middle of the jungle, it will produce enough food that building as many orbital food sources as you can the base size will overflow. I don't know if this bug is in SMAX as I don't have it and so have never played it.

You call that an edit?

[edit]

I edited that article 16 months ago just to link the page to MobyGames. What, are you copy-pasting messages to every single user that ever edited those pages? Kevin (talk) 03:51, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why contact so many people?

[edit]

I notice you contacted dozens of people about this. Wasn't there enough feed back from editors already there? Why not contact recent contributors or whoever made large contributions? Of if its just about the external links, talk to those who added or changed them. Seems odd to contact so many people. Are you planning on working on anything but the external links section? I've been making tiny tweaks to the language on SMAC -- I'm a fiddler and a polisher after others do the heavy lifting for the most part. Let me know if there are any specific areas where you want to see a little extra linguistic lacquer, in this article or others you are working on -- I'm pretty comfortable working with you on that level. RE:What is the process for promoting an article from Start Class to C Class?

[edit]

Guidelines for assessments are located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Assessment. To have the article reassed, you can put in a request at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Assessment/Requests. In response to a request, an assessor will review the article and generally post notes about their decision on the talk page. If the article meets certain certain quality criteria, then notes may be sparse or unnecessary.

In regard to suggestions to improve the article:

  1. I recommend fleshing out the "Reception" section first. I recommend checking other sources listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources. These are considered reliable for video game articles. Find whatever reviews you can and paraphrase the writer's comments with proper attribution: writer's name, publication, and citation.
    • "[NAME] of [PUBLICATION] praised the graphical detail.[#]"
  2. Once that's done, the "Development" section needs work. The process is similar to the reception section. Though instead of a writer's opinion, you're looking for news pertaining to production details: inspirations, processes, deadlines, time frames, etc. And again, the content should be properly attributed with citations:
    • "[DEVELOPER] spent X years/months developing the game.[#]"
  3. The "Gameplay" section is too detailed. Trim it down to the bare essentials. Just keep in mind that the reader doesn't need to know how to play the game to understand how it works.
  4. Remove unsourced statements and original research. Just keep Wikipedia:Verifiability in mind. Readers have to be able to verify content. Simple statements like "Alpha Centauri is a video game" do not need sourcing because this is very easily verifiable. But others like "Chiron is an homage to James P. Hogan's 1982 space opera novel Voyage from Yesteryear..." are very specific and require a citation to a reliable source.
  5. Organization would be good to reduce excess sub-headings. Some sections can be combined into other sections to reduce undue-weight and give better context.
    • Factions → Stoyline or Gameplay
    • Fiction and Modification → Legacy
    • Availability → Development
    • Expansion → Legacy or Development depending on the content

Hope it helps, let me know if you have any other questions. (Guyinblack25 talk 16:39, 21 June 2010 (UTC))[reply]

I gave the article a quick sweep and it has greatly improved. I'll try to give the article a copy edit sometime this week. Once all the work is done, it might have a chance to reach Good article. Keep up the good work. (Guyinblack25 talk 21:19, 29 June 2010 (UTC))[reply]
If you're still working on the article, then I'll wait until you're done.
A few quick suggestions:
  • I think you'll be fine without citations in the lead. The rest of the article that is cited will be able to back it up.
  • Gameplay is probably too bare bones.
  • I'd combine short paragraphs to make larger ones. 1–2 sentence paragraphs are too short to stand on their own.
The article is really improving. Keep it up. (Guyinblack25 talk 20:40, 1 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]
Just letting you know that I have not forgotten your request. Some project discussions and a GAN sidetracked me this past week. I'll look at the article as soon as I can. (Guyinblack25 talk 17:58, 12 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]
There are a couple places to get outside comments
  1. Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Assessment/Requests will provide brief comments to improve
  2. Peer reviews are meant for more in-depth comments
I'll still give the article a copy edit, I'll just be going at a slower pace. Once it's done, I think the article will do well at WP:GAN (Guyinblack25 talk 16:43, 6 December 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Just chiming in to let you know that I haven't forgotten about the article. Would you mind refreshing me what sections need copy editing? (Guyinblack25 talk 22:55, 13 January 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Vyeh hasn't been on in a couple months, so I'll try to answer. I don't know what he wanted copyedited, just that the article needs to be at GA level. I've never took an article to GA before, so do you see anything that needs to be fixed before I nominate it? Nolelover It's football season! 17:58, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good article processes

[edit]

As you're already aware, "GA" on Wikipedia typically refers to a "Good article". To obtain this quality rating, an article must be nominated at WP:Good article nominations, or GAN, where it is reviewed by an uninvolved editor. Given the backlog on the page, nominations can sometimes sit for a while until a reviewer comes along. The reviewer compares the article to the Good article criteria and will either pass or fail the nomination. Should an article degrade over time or the passed nomination is contentious, editors can place the article up for reassessment at WP:Good article reassessment, or GAR. Depending on the reassessment discussion, the article will either retain or lose its GA status. To further add more to digest, there are also Good topics, which are collections of Good articles that are within the same scope.

You'll see these terms pretty regularly at the VG project because many editors there try to bring articles up to Good quality, partly as a badge of honor, but also because review by an outside party ensures that quality is actually there. Hope that explains everything. If you have anymore questions, please let me know. (Guyinblack25 talk 19:24, 12 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Re: Italics

[edit]

Couldn't find it in the MOS, but things like Civilization's is just proper English- the title of the game is always italicized, but the "'s" isn't. If it looks strange to you, just change up the sentence structure- "Alpha Centauri uses a modified Civilization II's game engine." becomes "Alpha Centauri uses a modified version of the game engine from Civilization II. Also, the reason I said it was the sequel to the series, not the first game, was because it was sort of the sequel to both Civ1 and Civ2. That said, you're the one editing the article, so if you think it's just the "sequel" to Civ2 as it uses that engine and came out after it, go right ahead, it's your call. Good job on the article so far, I'm enjoying the improvements to it as I love that game. --PresN 15:19, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification

You state here that in the archive link I gave, I came across as looking worse than the person I reported to WQA because I raised the issue of Cailil's prior history with me. I would like to confirm that you read my statements on that matter, and disagree with me that Cailil's prior and new actions warranted my mentioning the prior history. Thank you. I've been going to the gym a lot and being on the computer a lot less. Congratulations to both you and GiB for the GA status. I trust you have been keeping an eye to make sure it doesn't lose the GA status through careless edits. Is there anything in the article or its talk page you would like me to look at? Vyeh (talk) 01:45, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article has been surprisingly quiet in the 50 or so edits that have been made since the GAR was passed. Please do look through that big diff though; you were always more knowledgeable in the more technical details of the game then I was and I'm sure I've missed something...I have so many other projects that I don't pay as much attention to SMAC as I should. Not much on the talk page either...one discussion back in April that led to the removal of the SMAX image, but other then that, nothing. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 02:45, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at both of your links and they're both good. The removal of the SMAX image is the final step in the merger of the SMAC and SMAX articles. That was one of the first steps taken toward GA status. I'm really glad that we took the journey together. Thank you very much. Vyeh (talk) 07:24, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Original Barnstar
No, thank you. It may be a little odd to be saying this when you aren't really active anymore, but I don't think I ever told you how much fun I had working with you on SMAC, or that that collaboration is the reason I continue to edit Wikipedia. This barnstar is the least I can give you in return. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:09, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the barn star! I had a lot of fun working with you. We had a great collaboration. I was confident that you would finish the article when my priorities changed and I am glad that it was a positive experience for you. Vyeh (talk) 21:06, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You absolutely deserve it. Do you have any other unfinished projects you're planning on working on, or are you pretty much done with Wikipedia? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 21:38, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello / goodbye!

[edit]

It looks like I might be too late to say "hello", so I'll give you my best wishes for your current ventures. I just thought I'd let you know that I'll soon be able to devote time on the SMAC article. I had volunteered to work on various Titanic-related stuff in preparation of the centenary and the resultant flood of readers. In the wake of my frenzied activity, I left some loose ends that I still need to tie-up, but will devote attention to SMAC after that. I promise to be careful not to disturb SMAC's GA status, and give the page the TLC that it deserves. Good luck, best wishes, etc. ~Eric F 184.76.225.106 (talk) 19:15, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ping! Nolelover (talk) 19:32, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I checked, and fixed one of, the quotes in the "Be My Boyfriend" section.
  • Kultusminister usually means minister for education and culture, but not worship.
  • Flitzpiepe, plural Flitzpiepen, is a word from beyond my native region, but I would think of it as a somewhat endearing (but here also patronizing) term for "fool", someone not to be taken seriously or who, in this case, did something (purportedly) unexpected. I don't think it's all that relevant here—it maybe could be if you did a separate article on the whole Indiggo–Bohlen collaboration.
  • Source reliability: The standards for articles about living persons are somewhat different, you might want to check. In general:
    • Bild is generally considered a tabloid newspaper/news site.
    • Die Welt should qualify as a reputable source.
    • openpr.de seems to be a website where anyone can post pretty much anything, not sure as to the reliability standard for that.
  • Also you might want to look into MOS:INOROUT as to the sequence of closing quotation marks and punctuation, in particular regarding song titles in quotes.

Hope that helps! ―BlaueBlüte (talk) 20:40, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@BlaueBlüte: That does help! I found another Bild source: Biss, Malte (February 22, 2006), "Bohlens Sexy-Zwillinge zeigen ihr Zuhause" [Bohlen's sexy twins show their home], Bild (in German), Berlin, Germany: Axel Springer SE, retrieved September 4, 2018. I used the quotes in that source in this section: Indiggo#Indiggo's Childhood. I'll eventually integrate it with the following section, but for now, that section is solely supported by one source.
  • Could you check those quotes against the single source?
  • How does de.wikipedia handle Bild?
Thank you for your help! Vyeh (talk) 00:57, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The quotes seem to be as okay as they probably can be, seeing that they were presumable translated from Romanian to German in the first place. Personally I would doubt that all of them are relevant, though.
The view on Bild among German Wikipedia editors appears to be boiling down to this:
  • Can be used if no other sources available.
  • However, frowned upon by some on principle.
  • If no other sources are available, that’s considered suggestive of a lack of relevance of the topic.
It seems that the English Wikipedia is more strict here. While there is no categorical rule against tabloid sources in the German WP, WP:BLPSOURCES is pretty clear about that regarding English Wikipedia biographies of living persons.
BlaueBlüte (talk) 06:15, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@BlaueBlüte: Thank you for your prompt response! Indiggo speaks German. I'm currently putting in any material from sources that could be relevant. I'll make a judgment on relevancy/noteworthiness when I start cutting. At the meeting last week, David Goodman compared Bild to Life (magazine) and Die Welt to Time (magazine). Daniel Buddell has has promised to find a non-Wikipedian German for an opinion about Bild.
Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources#Overview starts with the image and text below and to the right:

Source reliability falls on a spectrum: highly reliable sources, clearly unreliable sources, and many in the middle. Editors must use their judgment to draw the line between usable and unreliable sources.

WP:BLPSOURCES states "Material should not be added to an article when the only sourcing is tabloid journalism." From Bild, 'Der Spiegel wrote in 2006 that Bild "flies just under the nonsense threshold of American and British tabloids ... For the German desperate, it is a daily dose of high-resolution soft porn".[1]'

Indiggo—

[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Indiggo has been completed.

I did not edit the section "Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical". As it stands, this should appear under the "Stage" heading, not on its own, with only a basic description-where, when etc... This is an article on Indiggo not the musical. I leave that to you to decide. The way it is written now it is essentially a stand-alone article. A number of the sources used in the article are in my estimation unreliable, or have provided information which reads very much like parts of a press release that have been reproduced. These need to be worked on.

I would recommend that you not submit this article for consideration as a Feature Article until these issues have been addressed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:20, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Twofingered Typist: Thank you very much for copy editing and your comment! I will address those issues. Thank you also for the offer to answer my questions and concerns. Vyeh (talk) 16:40, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

For better sources needed, you've tagged:

  1. Bernstorff, James (May 7, 2017), Indiggo (in Danish), Artico Dore, retrieved September 2, 2018, which I intended to use to support that they started studying guitar at the age of six. Is this for the specific use of the source or the source in general? (I saw your edit comment.)
  2. Talent in Motion Magazine (2010), On the Cover: Indiggo Twins (pdf), vol. Winter, retrieved August 12, 2018, for appearances in shows, ads and music videos. Specific use or in general?
I did tag this one, but should have looked further. It looks fine for citing. Timmag appears to be a legitimate NYC magazine http://timmag.com/info/
  1. Music News Desk (August 10, 2011), Imagem Music Signs The Indiggo Twins, Broadway World, retrieved August 12, 2018, for signing a deal with Imagem. Specific use or in general?
This still reads like a press release to me. I may be wrong, but if there are better sources I'd use those.
  1. Gheorghe, Florian (March 9, 2017), "EXCLUSIV / Gemenele de la Indiggo au luat o pauză din alergătura spre celebritate. Au ajuns profe de dans din buric!" [EXCLUSIVE / The Indiggo twins have taken a break from the celebrity run. They came to the dance of belly dancing!], Libertatea (in Romanian), Bucharest, Romania: Ringier, retrieved September 3, 2018, used to support Imagem having contacts with Collins, Ludacris and Genesis. Specific use or in general?
A second look, and Google translate, have me thinking this website is fine to use for specific citations.

Are these the sources that in your estimation are unreliable or read like reproduced press releases? I have other sources for some of these, which I eliminated after my FA mentor cited WP:Citation overkill. Anything you can say about the issues you have with these four three sources would be helpful as I choose replacement sources.

I greatly appreciate the effort you've already put into the article. I know you are very busy and I greatly appreciate your time. I'm currently having the article peer reviewed, in return for reciprocation. If there is an article you would like me to copy-edit, let me know. Vyeh (talk) 17:36, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Guild of Copy Editors can always use a hand. You're more than welcome to edit any article on our Requests list.

Another tagged source: "No Love in the City (2009) | Full Cast & Crew", IMDb, Amazon, retrieved September 13, 2018. What is your opinion re Wikipedia:Citing_IMDb#Disputed_uses, "IMDb content which is in dispute about whether it is appropriate to reference on Wikipedia: Released films only: Sections such as the cast list, character names, ... ?" Vyeh (talk) 18:13, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The use of IMDB for cast personnel seems to be unresolved. If you have no other source, I can't see how you can avoid using it.

Hope these replies help. Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:08, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Twofingered Typist: I'll take a look at your Requests list tonight. Thank you for looking again at the sources. I've given thought to the section "Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical." I think it makes more sense to use the information and sources in the "Music/Wicked Clone" subsection, perhaps retitling the subsection "Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical" in a fashion similar to the integration of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest into the "Be My Boyfriend" and the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest into the "Love Struck" subsections. I condensed and merged the section "Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical" into the subsection "Music/Wicked Clone." Vyeh (talk) 20:45, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PR

[edit]

Yes, I read your post at the ed noticeboard and it reinforced the idea that some kind of general warning for reviewers would be a good thing. I linked to your comment in the edit summary. I haven't checked if it's been reverted today. (I skeptically expect someone to reverse/decline any idea I have or action I take once I step outside my own little space on WP. Bonuses are when someone actually uses the thanks button or such, so thank you!)

I thought there were some folks who oversaw the peer review system as a whole, but I didn't see anyone doing much about the problem. The education noticeboard is troublingly quiet (as always?) from people we should be hearing from, and who should have a role in correcting problems. Outriggr (talk) 22:44, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm archiving inactive PR requests to clean the page up a bit and I was wondering if you were still working on the Lana Turner PR? It's fairly thorough and I don't want to archive it if you're still using it. I'm also going to message the nominator. ♠PMC(talk) 06:46, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Premeditated Chaos: I'm still working on Lana Turner. Vyeh (talk) 14:38, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so you guys are still using the peer review page? ♠PMC(talk) 14:46, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Premeditated Chaos: I can't speak for the nominator (although I hope to entice him/her to make additional comments on the Indiggo peer review), but I just added another section. I'm being thorough because Lana Turner stalled in FAN. Note that Fisa2702 has promised to "attempt" to add to the Indiggo peer review. I would appreciate it if you would consider the Indiggo peer review still active. Thank you. Vyeh (talk) 16:11, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No prob, I've been mostly closing stuff that's either well outside the inactivity recommendation or pretty sparse. The Lana one looked borderline enough that I thought I'd rather check first. I'll pass over Indiggo as well if I get there. ♠PMC(talk) 00:35, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
