Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on November 16, 2014.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the tritone heard at the beginning of Jimi Hendrix's song "Purple Haze" was historically called "Devil in music" and to play it was considered comparable to ringing Satan's doorbell?

Tritone

[edit]

Actually the tritone was never banned by the Spanish Inquisition. Look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritone#Historical_uses The cited sources (both are books about Jimi Hendrix) seem to have adopted this urban myth without more researching. The term diabolus in musica was never treated in a papal bull. Please correct this to avoid reproducing this myth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:16B8:424D:3901:C6D9:87FF:FECA:C8C1 (talk) 00:20, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The WP Tritone article includes several "needs additional citations for verification" tags and under the "Historical uses" section "possibly contains original research". The paragraph that mentions the Church is unreferenced, so there don't seem to be any sources that support "likely fanciful". —Ojorojo (talk) 15:42, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
