Good article nomination
[edit]First Nomination
[edit]This article was nominated on WP:GA/N, but I did not promote it, because some of the prose is not encyclopaedic. The section 'What is a Hoya' is a prime example, using the second person inappropriately and also lacking sources. Section headings need normal sentence capitalisation (WP:MOS) and the lead section needs to summarise all of the article content (WP:LEAD). Worldtraveller 00:39, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Second Nomination
[edit]Lead still needs to be expanded per WP:LEAD but everything else is ok. Thanks --Jaranda wat's sup 23:44, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Contradictory descriptions of the term "Hoya"
[edit]The first sentence of the "What is a Hoya" section notes that the origin of the term "Hoya" is unknown. But a parenthetical note in the second sentence of the article declares that "the name means 'what' or 'which'". So do we know or don't we? Because one of those ought to go. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.158.252.156 (talk) 02:23, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- I hate to butt in, but this has sort of thrust itself upon me: Something seems not exactly right with that "Greek" theory — it's a relative pronoun — badly-transliterated, btw — i.e., it resembles the Greek relative pronoun οἷα 'which', 'such as' (neuter plural), which would normally be transliterated hoia, but under only the most bizarre circumstances imaginable would be joined to a Latin neuter plural noun such as saxa 'rocks'; as far as I know, that simply is not done. Furthermore, the phrase would be incomplete: 'such rocks as...' — ... as what? It doesn't make sense to me. I would suggest further research; can this be documented, or is it perhaps some kind of Georgetown apocryphal story?
- Meanwhile, in perhaps another bizarre juxtaposition, I've run into this very short article on Angria, an area in medieval Saxony (German Sachsen 'Saxony'; an inhabitant was a Saxon, i.e. Sachse, = Old English Seaxe, in the dominant southern dialect, but Saxe or even Saxa in more northerly dialects). This bit of German Saxony later became the county of Hoya. Are these connections of no connection to the mysterious Georgetown "Hoya Saxa"? — I'll never tell, alas, because I do not know. But it might bear some research, I would think. — To me, this latter lead makes as much sense as, or maybe a tiny bit more than, an oddly-spelled incomplete bilingual relative clause.
- Just passing through and thought I'd further confuse the situation, er, try to help... :~> Good luck. DevilInTheDetails (talk) 10:49, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- This problem has been solved about as well as anyone could solve it, without a history PhD devoting a couple of years to the task. The article acknowledges that the "official story" is not "precise". And rightly so -- it would be hard enough to explain the hijinks that occured back when I was in college, let alone the ones that happened 100 years ago and lead to the school's nickname. But the Latin/Greek story is by no means "the most bizarre circumstances imaginable." Let me walk you through it: a bunch of 20-year old men are living away from their parents, and away from the moderating influence of women students. School rules require them to study Latin and Greek, despite their limited utility in the off-campus world. So the kids do what any bored kids do -- they play around, in this case by combining the two languages to get funny expressions. That's an eminently plausible story, and it matches the scant historical data available, which is why the University endorses the story even as it admits its imperfections. --M@rēino 17:29, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Nikita Mescheriakov
[edit]Can anyone assess this article: Nikita Mescheriakov?
Is he a notable basketball player?
Thanks in advance. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:12, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- He's not notable, in my opinion. I've upgraded the notable tag to a proposed deletion. --M@rēino 19:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
I mean Chris Wright
[edit]Is he a one of the Hoyas basketball player? I thought he was in Princeton and Is he a famous in Big East? Please answer my questions. Hoya94th (talk) 10:36, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, Chris Wright wears #4 and is a a guard entering his junior year at Georgetown. He missed much of his freshman year with an injury.-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 13:53, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
GA Reassessment
[edit]- This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Georgetown Hoyas/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.
I'm reassessing this article on behalf of GA sweeps. Even on a skim I'm noticing several major issues:
- Ref #16 (Glory Days) is a deadlink, as is the first external link.
- All refs need to be filled out (titles, publishers, accessdates, etc.); no bare links.
- The sections "fight song", "men's basketball", and "men's rugby" are unreferenced.
- Men's basketball and rugby should be expanded, especially the latter since it's one sentence.
- Should be at least one ref per paragraph.
I'll give you five days to fix this. If taken care of I'll do a fuller review, if not it'll be delisted. Wizardman 19:31, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- I've realized for a while that the Good Article standards had risen far past the current status of this article. However, I'll fix these items so we can get a fuller review. I appreciate your comments on what the article wants for most.-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 19:44, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Progress is decent so far. I'm tempting to just delist though just so that you guys have plenty of time to modify everything and can bring the article to GA when you're ready. If you'd rather keep it and work on it quickly, lemme know and I'll finish the review sometime quickly. Wizardman 04:27, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- Well I think there are some philosophical decisions to be made about the article. Namely what role each individual sport plays. Do we need a section on every sport, just the big sports, or should this article be about what the sports have in common, like facilities, fight song, traditions, etc. I'm fairly comfortable with those commons things, but its six hodgepodge sports sections that need the most work. The second most popular sport there, that being their men's lacrosse, isn't even currently mentioned on the page. I'll have to see what other schools have done. Sorry to do this again, but let me get back to you.-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 04:37, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- That's fine; I'm sure you know more about which particular sports should be mentioned than I do. Wizardman 04:43, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

- So my snooping around has found a few articles we can use as a possible basis for improvements here. Primarily, Michigan State Spartans, which seems like the only other article on a school athletics programs at GA level. Also, several specific sports, usually football programs such as Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football, have however made it to GA, but that doesn't give us a good template to use here.
- Examples of good formatting and style I liked on non-GAs came from articles on Pittsburgh Panthers and maybe North Carolina Tar Heels. Sprawling ones I don't want copy include Connecticut Huskies, Michigan Wolverines, and Kentucky Wildcats. Anyone see other examples? Things I like about those articles include sections for Olympians, info on Scholar Athletes, and divisions between varsity and club sports.-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 22:21, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I think I've achieved the initial goal you set forth for us last month, of getting a reference for each paragraph, getting rid of the bare links, and making sections a more appropriate length. So if you wanted to give a fuller review under GAR, I think its ready for that. OR if you feel it needs to be demoted, that's alright too. However what I need to note is that I'm off for holiday's for a bit, so I won't be around to respond to issues for the next month, and I don't know if others will be around either. So Merry Christmas!-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 21:41, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- Alright. I'll do a prose review sometime in early January, and will keep it on hold until January 31, which will be the final deadline. Wizardman 22:19, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, catch up with you then.-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 00:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Final part of the review:
- Refs #41 and 42 went dead (figures, they were ones you just put in) as did the big east external link.
- There's one citation needed tag left to fill.
You have until January 30 to finish these two things, and I'll then make my final decision on the article. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 21:54, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
- Everything's been fixed and it looks good. The site for those above refs is being remodeled, so they'll be fine so long as they redirect when the remodeling is finished. It looks miles better than when this review started, and as such I can finally close this as a kept GA. Well done. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 02:38, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help!-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 20:58, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
Porterfield
[edit]Dan Porterfield valiantly stepped in as interim Athletics Director last year when Muir quit abruptly, but does he belong in the table with the other historic ADs? Does he go in italics? Or with an asterisk? Maybe without a number, as I have it now?-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 17:19, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Varsity Sports Section
[edit]It currently says that Patrick Henner is the coach of the women's cross country and track teams, while he is the director of men's and women's track and field, according to GUHoyas.com the head women's cross country coach is Chris Miltenberg. Also, Coach Miltenberg recently won the NCAA coach of the year for women's cross country as he lead his team to an NCAA national championship in Terre Haute this past November. I think there should be some mention of him under the coach category for women's cross country. Furthermore, the NCAA national championship that the women won was only the second national championship for any sport in school history yet there is no mention of it anywhere in this article. The article should be updated to include an accomplishment as prestigious as that.Springaling17 (talk) 01:30, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Tony Johnson is the Men's Crew Team Head Coach and the woman are currently coached by Miranda Paris, who is in her first year of coaching for the Hoyas. Also, another notable alum of the Georgetown Men's Crew team is Bradley Cooper.TstreetG (talk) 03:47, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks guys for the suggestions. I've updated the article with a section for Track and field and cross country, noting the recent NCAA championship. I've also added the coaches you mentioned to the sections on each sport, but removed the big list of coaches from the top of the Varsity section, since it will be difficult to keep current. Also feel free to make your own edits to the article if you see other places it can be updated!-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 03:21, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Broken external link
[edit]The link for Georgetown Rowing Association is broken. Pox202 (talk) 14:06, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, I removed it. There's a rowing section on the GUHoyas.com page, which we link to already, so we don't need ones for the specific teams.-- Patrick, oѺ∞ 03:48, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
