Indra Sistemas, S.A. (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈindɾa sisˈtemas]) is a Spanish information technology and defense company. Indra is listed on the Bolsa de Madrid and is a constituent of the IBEX 35 index.[2]
The current executive chairman is Ángel Escribano.[3]
In 2018 and 2019 Indra was fined for participating in a 14-year cartel rigging the contracts for Spanish railway infrastructure and leading a 15-year cartel rigging the offers of IT services to several public administrations in Spain.
Business areas
[edit]Indra is organized around three business areas: information technologies, simulation & automatic test equipment, and defense electronic equipment.[citation needed] Indra's portfolio ranges from consultancy, project development, and systems and applications integration to outsourcing of IT systems and business processes, structured into two primary segments: solutions and services (including outsourcing and application maintenance), and business processes where technology is a strategic and differentiating element (BPO).[citation needed] This includes:
- Air traffic control systems, where as of 2009 it was one of the world's largest suppliers;[4] Indra claims that a third of the world's air traffic is managed by systems developed by the company (such as the SACTA system)
- Aircraft simulators
- Defense
- Ticketing systems developed for rapid transit systems such as those in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Shanghai, Athens, Buenos Aires, Mumbai[5] and Santiago de Chile[citation needed]
- Financial services
- Energy
- Electoral technology and processes
- Health information systems
History
[edit]The company was formed as Ceselsa-Inisel S.A. upon the merge of Cecelsa and Inisel (by absortion of the latter by the former).[6] The initial share pool was owned by INI (62%), José Antonio Pérez Nievas (20%), Sainco (4%), BBV (4%), and Paribas (3%).[7]
In January 2025, Ángel Escribano was appointed as executive chairman in replacement of Marc Murtra, who was appointed as Telefónica chairman.[8] Also in January 2025, Indra purchased the 89.68% of communications satellite operator Hispasat from Redeia.[9] Later in 2025, in the context of General Dynamics European Land Systems' rejection of Indra offers for Santa Bárbara Sistemas (and its factory in La Trubia ), Indra president Ángel Escribano announced plans to launch an 'Indra Land Vehicles' division and the purchase of a factory in Gijón from Duro Felguera to develop military vehicles.[10][11]
Revenues
[edit]About a third of the company's annual revenues come[when?] from international markets.[citation needed] By geographical areas, Europe and the United States are[when?] the two international markets with the greatest weight and growth for Indra. Indra is operating also in Latin America.[citation needed]
Fines for rigging
[edit]Indra was fined in 2018,[12] and 2019[13] for participating in a 14-year cartel rigging the contracts for Spanish railway infrastructure and leading a 15-year cartel rigging the offers of IT services to several public administrations in Spain.[14]
Indra Sistemas ran the 2008 Angolan legislative election and was accused of helping the MPLA win that election.[15]
