I'm not opposed to the move, but it needs to be made clear that the identification is highly controversial. For example, I recall that Gwyn Jones was completely opposed to it. Oleg of Novgorod may provide a good model for this sort of merger (see the section on Helgu). Briangotts (Talk) (Contrib) 14:35, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Since I wrote the Amlaíb article, I've read Hudson's Oxford DNB article http://www.oxforddnb.com/index/101049263/ which comments "The career of Óláf the White corresponds with that of the Olaf ‘son of the king of Lochland’ (Norway) (d. 875), also known as Óláf, king of Dublin (c.853–871), whose activities are recorded in the Irish chronicles; many scholars consider them to be the same individual. They were active at the same time, in the same place, and were recognized as the leaders of the vikings in Ireland."
- Likewise, Alex Woolf in Pictland to Alba (p. 282) says "It has long been noted that Óláfr the White must be, or at the very least must draw some of his attributes from the Amlaíb son of the king of Laithlind who first appears in the Irish sources in 853 and whom the Chronicle of the Kings of Alba seems to say was kiled by Constantín son of Cináed in Pictavia (c. 871-2)."
- Would you have access to Helle's Cambridge History of Scandinavia? Would be nice to know what, if anything, that says about Olaf. I understand that some people identify Olaf the White and some other saga-Olafs. Any ideas on that? Angus McLellan (Talk) 14:53, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Haven't seen Helle's book. Donnchadh O'Corrain's "Vikings in Ireland and Scotland in the Ninth Century" is agnostic on the point of Olaf=Amlaib. But O'Corrain notes that the following works support the identification:
- J.H. Todd. (ed. and tr.). Cogadh Gaedhil re Gallaibh, RS 48 (London 1867)
- Alexander Bugge. Contributions to the History of the Norsemen in Ireland I-III, Videnskabsselskabets Skrifter, Oslo 1900
- Peter Hunter Blair. "Olaf the White and the Three Fragments of Irish Annals." Viking 3 (1939) 1-35.
- Also according to O'Corrain, A.P. Smyth (author of Scandinavian Kings of the British Isles, 850-880 (Oxford 1977)) wrote that "there can be no doubt that the so called Olafr inn hviti of Icelandic sources was the same king as Amlaibh, the ninth-century ruler of Dublin."

I'll try to see if I can get access to any of these sources via Google books or amazon. --Briangotts (Talk) (Contrib) 16:37, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I haven't seen any of those. The Internet Archive has one book by Bugge, MacFirbis's On the Fomorians and the Norsemen, but not that. I ordered a big heap of Irish books that are supposedly on their way, and a fair number of Scandinavian history ones that will be delivered in the UK (so I won't see them until new year). I have to say that I'm not one to put much faith in A.P. Smyth's opinions. Gofraid mac Fergusa was written using his views, and see where that got us! Infobox at Eardwulf
editAngus, I just replied to Tony's comments at the Eardwulf FAC. I think I dealt with everything except the infobox, which I don't really mind about one way or the other. What's your opinion? Mike Christie (talk) 11:31, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Geograph images
editGood to see that you are using some of the excellent images on geograph to improve WP articles - something I've been doing on and off for a while. It makes so much difference to an article to have a well-taken photograph or two.
A couple of months ago I discovered the discussion group "Geograph of the Year 2007" which informally produces a shortlist of the best 50 or so images submitted every week, then chooses a "winner". All very subjective, but entertaining - and the images are stunning. I've been slotting in a few of these "cream of the cream" images where appropriate in WP - thought you might enjoy doing the same if you feel inclined. You have to login to geograph, then click Discuss (left menu) and choose the Geograph of the Year 2007 discussion.
Cheers - and keep up the good work! -- Euchiasmus 20:51, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I really must create an account and upload some of my appallingly bad snaps. When I've done that, I shall try and vote for my favourites, although it's hard to choose when there are so many excellent photographs. Thanks! Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:53, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Worth creating an account even if you only upload occasionally. BTW I decided to ignore their "points" system for being the first in a square (too many squares have an appalling first photo because somebody wanted to grab the geograph point) and just try to get some diversity into some squares. - Euchiasmus 06:42, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanx
editThank you for your welcome to wkipedia.Be assured that I do know about the CELT site and any edits i make will directly be associated with these materials.I recently created an article dealing with the Ulaid king Demman mac Cairell which can be referenced from the Kings of Ulster list.I would appreciate your opinion on this article. I have found there is a lack of early medieval Irish history on wikipedia and would like to expand it.Timelinefrog 00:43, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Help on correcting my mistakes in article titles
editI have now been able to check all my sources on irish names and am attempting to standardize names in my articles with the time period they apply to.However the articles themselves have the incorrect name.instead of starting a new article with the correct name and then transferring the data creating a duplicate article under differnt titles and handling any redirecting is there a way to simply change the title of an article.Timelinefrog 05:13, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Congratulations
editEardwulf just made FA. Congratulations! First Northumbrian FA, I think. I'm going to nominate Wulfhere and probably Coenwulf after that, but will get back to Aldfrith in the new year if you're still interested in having me take it to FAC. Thanks -- Mike Christie (talk) 11:18, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Maps
editCheck out this link; it takes you to a web version of their application. What I do is set this to the area I want to make a map of, fiddle with the overlays (check out the toolbox) till I get rid of cities and other junk, and then do a screen grab and dump it into Powerpoint. Then I add the overlay text and voila, a map. Not fancy, but quite adequate for most things. Have a go; I'm more than happy to make you some maps myself if you like. By the way, I did try moving the map and grabbing two images and overlaying them to get a larger high res map, but I found the images didn't line up exactly -- a probably with the map projection, I would assume.
I think DMIS is really very useful and if I knew where to post it I'd put up a note telling people how to use it. Any idea where to post such a comment? Mike Christie (talk) 02:23, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Any thoughts on this and related articles. By the way, can you mention me and my stuff to other interested partys? Besides yourself I get very little feedback on any of my articles (except when I fuck up!) Fergananim —Preceding comment was added at 17:30, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Argyll and Bute
editI know you're likely to know a lot more about places in Scotland than I do as a Canadian, but some of your recent prod notices sound like you may not know that User:The Anomebot2 sometimes posts the wrong geographical coordinates to an article. The bot doesn't always get things right; sometimes it makes mistakes if two different places in the same country have similar or identical names. For Canadian locations, the bot sometimes adds coordinates that aren't even in the correct province. My apologies if you know for a fact that Aird, Add and Achnahard actually don't exist, but if you're just basing the prod notices on the fact that the coordinates don't line up to the location described by the article, then assume that the coordinates are wrong before you assume that the article is, remove the coordinates and verify the place's existence or non-existence through other sources first. Bearcat (talk) 01:07, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- My personal knowledge of the geography of Argyll is unlikely to be much better than yours. It's 20 years and more since I was last there. The problem with these, bless Epbr123's little cotton socks for trying to improve geographical coverage, is that they were created from either a gazetteer (best case) or from a map (worst case). "X is a village in Y" is fine, if X really is a village in Y, but sometimes X is not a village, or even a settlement of any size.
- Tools for confirming or denying the villageness of X. There's a C19th Gazetteer of Scotland online. The Argyll page is here. No Add under settlements, but there is a River Add, and a Dunadd; the Add in River Add is just north of the supposed location. You can see Achnahard on the OS map here. Note the absence of anything in the way of a settlement, this on a 1:25k map. And I only do these checks if Geograph can't find the place. So I'm not relying on a single source. I could not find Aird, Argyll and Bute in the modern OS place name list or on Geograph, but I did eventually figure out that it was here. No village.
- Now let's look at two that I didn't tag or tagged and then untagged:
- Ardchonnell. A couple of houses at most: seen here.
- Annat, Argyll and Bute. Not much on the map, but I found an aerial photo that suggested there was something there. Probably a barn, but I erred on the side of inclusion.
- I can't prove they don't exist, but unless the evil OS are plotting something, I suspect that these are not, in any real sense, villages or settlements. Hope this makes sense, Angus McLellan (Talk) 01:48, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, fair enough. I was just concerned because the way you expressed yourself in the prod reasoning, it sounded like you were going solely by the lack of a named location at the provided coordinates. I'll readd the prods. Bearcat (talk) 01:54, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- No bother, it's a perfectly sensible thing to ask! Unfortunately, I need to do the searches if I can't find the place at the first attempt as it's quite common that there's a photo hiding somewhere else, under a different map grid or a different name, that makes an interesting addition. In England it seems that every other picture I add is a church, a village pond, or a village green. Not so many of those in Argyll, so it makes a change. Constantine
editI'll try to take a look this weekend -- as with Flann Sinna, I know little about the subject area, so you'll get an outsider's view. If I don't get to it this weekend it'll be late next week, most likely. Mike Christie (talk) 13:31, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- I did the tree in Powerpoint; I can send you a ppt if you like, so you can edit and modify (easier than starting from scratch). Mike Christie (talk) 14:24, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Margraves/Marquis/Marquesses? of Montferrat
editI am looking for third parties in yet another little "dispute" I have sadly entered upon with a certain user. Perhaps you would be interested in the discussion I have had with Michael Sanders concerning his renaming of the rulers of Montferrat from "[Name] [Ordinal] of Montferrat" to "[Name] [Ordinal], Marquess of Montferrat". I have opened a discussion at Talk:Rulers of Montferrat. Srnec (talk) 03:59, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Rex Germanus
editIf you remove his name from the ban list, then you should leave a comment on the talk page and at WP:AN explaining what you are doing. Ideally, you would leave this comment before taking unilateral action. This user has become your moral responsibility. Please keep an eye on him. - Jehochman Talk 11:33, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm in the middle of writing them up. He will, of course, remain indefinitely blocked. I will not unblock him without your agreement, always assuming that he asks to be unblocked and can agree suitable terms for unblocking. I cannot imagine that he'd be unblocked without stringent limitations; I would insist, at the very least, that he accepted that any unblocking would be subject to a broad topic ban on editing articles in any way touching upon north-west European languages and ethnicity. Perhaps a white-listing approach might serve better. Anyway, this is all hypothesis since Rex has supposedly left the building. Angus McLellan (Talk) 11:45, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- That sounds reasonable. - Jehochman Talk 11:53, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Question about a closure
edit(And no, it's not what you think : )
I was researching past CFD closures, and while reading over the page, came across this discussion. When looking over the history of categories in question, there seems to be some confusion over whether they were to be kept or deleted. Am I missing something? - jc37 10:52, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Burma cats.
editHello? Angus, since the main article's name was changed to Burma and the main category was changed to Burma, it only makes sense to change all the daughter categories and articles (e.g. it makes no sense for Buddhism in Burma to be the main article for Category:Buddhism in Myanmar.) -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 20:14, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of article on the London Accord
editI note that the article on the London Accord has been deleted three times now. Most administrators when seeing the rebirth of an article that has been deleted three times will (undertandably) automatically re-delete it without looking at it.
I am writing to request you not to do this, as I honestly believe that the reasons given have been addressed now.
I have recreated the article at User:Mike Young/LondonAccord. I have expanded it and added other stuff to make a useful article which cannot resonably claim to be copy vio (remember the London Accord website is open source). I see no reason why the article in its present form should be deleted. However you may. Please feel free to comment on the article on it's talk page, or even better to help me improve it by editing it into a form which you will find acceptable as an article. This is a much more sensible course of action than engaging in a deletion war. I would appreciate a "Yes this is OK" on the talk page if you think this is not an article that warrants a speedy delete.
Thank you very much in anticipation for your time. Mike Young (talk) 02:19, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Hello! I saw you speedily deleted Image:Efine.jpg, that I believed qualified for I9 as copyright violation, and you believed qualified for G11 as blatant advertising. Thank you. I had already reported the uploader at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User:Destinyefine for 1) creation of the article E-fine (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) (restore|cache|AfD) that User:Pegasus speedily delted per WP:CSD#A7, 2) the image you just deleted, and 3) vandalism of Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Free licenses. (diff). Would you please take a look at the ANI and advise? Thank you! Taric25 (talk) 17:49, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hello. Thanks for your note. For now there's nothing else we need to do where Destinyefine (talk · contribs) is concerned. If the article keeps getting recreated, we can add it to Wikipedia:Protected titles, but so far that hasn't happened. Hope this helps, Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:25, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your advice! ☺ Taric25 (talk) 20:31, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Michael Sanders
editAngus, a review of Michael's talk page and block log seems to imply that he has a history of being intractable in discussions of this sort; he's certainly irritated quite a few people, though I didn't dig into each case to find the merits. He has continued to edit articles to his preferences. I asked him nicely to stop his edits and he said no. He's stopped now, presumably because of the time zone he's in.
I suggest we wait until tomorrow and see whether anyone else comments at the discussion location. I think Haukur and the anon editor were clearly in agreement with you, and so I think it's quite likely that the consensus will go against Michael. I don't particularly want to waste a lot of time subsequently reverting all his edits. If he continues to edit as he has been I don't see much choice except to ask at ANI for another admin to warn him to cooperate. I would think there's a case for blocking him, though I don't keep up with the blocking policy and am not certain this would qualify. We could easily out-revert him, but that's pointless and would just lead to escalation.
Let me know what you think. With luck, by the time I wake up tomorrow morning, all this will have been taken care of . . . . Mike Christie (talk) 01:53, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi, would you mind recreating - if possible - this file? You deleted it as a duplicate of Image:004353Drummond.jpg. It was not a duplicate, Image:004353Drummond.jpg was distorted and I had asked Grant65 to delete it for me, which he did. Image:004353Drummond1.jpg will be used in a new article on Air Marshal Peter Drummond that I'll be finalising shortly. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 05:50, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
