Overview

A Skill File is a markdown file that teaches AI agents (Claude, Cursor) how to use the Hooked Video API. Once installed, your agent knows the main endpoints, how to authenticate, and how to follow a video from creation to download, with no manual prompting.

MCP vs Skill: The MCP Server gives your agent direct API access (tool calls). The Skill File gives your agent knowledge about the API (documentation). For the best experience, use both together.

The copy in the GitHub repository has not been updated to the version this page describes yet. Until it is, it documents an older API (for example trend endpoints that are not part of the API, and a response with a videoId on create). Check the description at the top of the file: the current one starts with “Create AI videos with the Hooked API”.

Place the skill in your project’s .cursor/skills/ directory:

Upload SKILL.md as a project knowledge file in your Claude project settings.

Setup

The skill tells your agent to send your key in the x-api-key header, read from HOOKED_API_KEY:

export HOOKED_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"

Create a key at hooked.so/dashboard?settings=api-keys.

What the Skill Teaches

The skill file contains:

Section	What the Agent Learns
Authentication	The `x-api-key` header and where to create a key
Base URL	`https://api.hooked.so/v1`
How a video gets made	Create answers `{ projectId, status }` right away; the video comes later through polling or a webhook. Retry a create only with the same `Idempotency-Key`
Video Creation	The `POST /v1/project/create/*` endpoints and the fields each one reads: script-to-video, prompt-to-video, talking avatar, UGC Studio (one endpoint per format), hook + demo, podcast, TikTok slideshows, scenes, quiz video, Reddit story, scrolling video, captions, background removal, extend video
Resources	`GET` endpoints for avatars, voices and music, with their query parameters and response shapes
Progress	`GET /v1/project/{projectId}`, the video endpoints and `POST /v1/render`, with project and video status values
Webhooks	The webhook payloads, including the one sent when a project fails before it has a video
Credits and errors	Managed vs bring-your-own-keys teams, and the error responses (402 `missing_credentials`, `INSUFFICIENT_CREDITS`, `subscription_required`, …)
Examples	curl requests for a full create, poll and download workflow, and tips for agents

Skill + MCP Together

For maximum capability, combine the Skill File with the MCP Server:

Skill File gives your agent knowledge (understands the API, knows best practices)
MCP Server gives your agent tools (can actually make API calls)

Together, your agent can work out which video to make and then make it.

The skill is maintained in the hooked-skill repository. To update, download it again:
