Duplicates

Files that exist twice,
confirmed byte for byte.

Every match is a full hash, never a guess from a name. Keep the first copy and stage the rest in one click. APFS clones are recognised and left alone.

$19 once. Duplicates comes with every other room.

Every copy, and where it lives. Grouped, sized and counted.

Each group shows the file once, how many copies there are and what each one weighs, then every path it turns up in. The first copy is kept; the rest are extras.

A real match, or no match at all.

01

Two cheap passes, then a full SHA-256 to confirm

02

Keep first, stage the rest, one click per group

03

APFS clones spotted and excluded from the total

How it works

01

Confirmed, never guessed

Two quick passes narrow the candidates by size and a partial read, then a full SHA-256 confirms every match. A file is only called a duplicate when every byte agrees.

02

Keep one, stage the rest

Each group shows every copy and where it lives. Keep the first and stage the others with one click, or pick by hand.

03

Clones left alone

APFS clones share their storage, so deleting one frees nothing. DiskBuddy recognises them and leaves them out of the total.

04

Your threshold

Set the smallest file worth checking, from 100 KB up, so the list is about space rather than about thousands of tiny files.

Hashed on your Mac. No file, and no file name, ever leaves it.

Questions about Duplicates

How does DiskBuddy know two files are duplicates?

It compares size first, then a partial read, then a full SHA-256 hash of both files. Only files whose full contents match are grouped.

Does it find similar photos?

Duplicates finds exact copies. Photos that look alike but differ in their bytes are not grouped.

Is anything deleted automatically?

No. Extra copies are staged in the cleanup queue, and nothing moves until you review it and press Clean.

One copy is enough. Keep it.
