The idea for GrYEN – Sustainability Intelligence Network came from observing how daily financial decisions and business operations directly impact the environment, yet most people and organizations lack tools to measure this relationship. While individuals make purchases and businesses operate services such as petrol pumps, restaurants, or retail shops, the environmental consequences of these actions are rarely visible in real time.

We wanted to build a platform that connects finance, sustainability, and intelligent decision-making. Our goal was to create a system where individuals and institutions can measure their carbon footprint, financial behavior, and ESG performance in one place. Inspired by the growing importance of sustainability, green finance, and environmental accountability, GrYEN was designed to help users make better financial decisions that are also environmentally responsible.

What it does

GrYEN is an AI-powered sustainability intelligence platform that allows both individual users and businesses to track and improve their environmental and financial impact.

The platform provides two main user environments:

Individual Dashboard

Individuals can:

Track daily expenses

Estimate the carbon footprint of spending habits

Receive a GrYEN Sustainability Score

Use an AI assistant to get recommendations for reducing environmental impact

Simulate financial decisions and analyze long-term sustainability

Business / Institutional Dashboard

Businesses such as petrol pumps, restaurants, retail stores, offices, and institutions can:

Calculate their ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) score

Track operational sustainability metrics

Analyze emissions, energy usage, and waste patterns

Receive AI-generated sustainability recommendations

The platform also includes a blockchain-based reward system that issues prototype sustainability tokens when users improve their environmental impact.

An integrated AI assistant called GrYen acts as a conversational guide that helps users interpret insights and make smarter decisions.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that works for both individuals and institutions, since their data structures and sustainability metrics differ significantly.

Another challenge was estimating carbon emissions from everyday activities and business operations. Because real-world environmental datasets are complex, we had to create simplified emission models suitable for a prototype.

Integrating blockchain into a sustainability analytics platform also required designing a meaningful reward system rather than simply adding blockchain for novelty.

Finally, balancing technical complexity with usability was important to ensure the platform remains accessible to both technical and non-technical users.

Another key learning was the importance of designing technology that encourages behavioral change, not just data analysis. By providing insights, scores, and recommendations, platforms like GrYEN can motivate users and businesses to adopt more sustainable practices.
