Inspiration
The inspiration for this financial planning app comes from the realization that many people struggle to keep track of their finances and plan for their future. In a 'perma-crisis' world, where people are cancelling subscriptions, pausing contributions to pensions and abandoning life and health insurance, we would like to help users become more conscientious of how they track and spend their money.
What it does
Budget Boost records income and spending. It uses this information to calculate net income and analyses which categories to budget in.
How we built it
We built this app using React and the Polaris component library.
Challenges we ran into
At first, we were going to create an app in React Native, however, there was an issue with the environment and our app was not compiling. The financial chart displaying monthly income and expenses was conflicting with existing dependencies (chart.js). The ideal graph would display the data as below.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing a user-friendly application that helps people in this world of 'perma-crisis' manage their financials.
What we learned
Through developing this product, we learned about the financial challenges introduced to people in a post-pandemic, high-inflation society. In addition, when we overcame technical challenges we learned about package dependencies, expo and component libraries.
What's next for Budget Booster
We hope to continue developing our app to better support our users in their financial journeys. In further development stages, we hope to add features that can directly link to their bank accounts, have an investment component or a coupon component.
