English: A Hindu-Buddhist-Jain is a hybrid mix of two or more creatures, real or mythical. Examples include a hybrid of fish, crocodile, horse, lion, elephant or dragon. The earliest Indian and Chinese cave temples, such as the 5th-century Buddhist cave temples in Shansi province, show makara (see J. H. Lindsay, The Makara in Early Chinese Buddhist Sculpture, Cambridge University Press, JSTOR 25222499). They are common in temple reliefs in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. In Nepal they can be seen on many spouts of old drinking fountains and in window and door ornaments of temples and palaces. Sometimes the body and tail are extended in the shape of scrolls and adopt a purely ornamental purpose. From the open mouth with large fangs escapes a nāga, an animal or a small figure.
Makara (मकर) is also a Sanskrit word that means crocodile. It is the mythical vahana of Vedic god Varuna in Hinduism.

Français : Le Makara est l'équivalent du Capricorne, une créature mythique avec un corps de poisson.
